What Drive Can Do It All?
« on: March 01, 2007, 03:52:00 AM »

Was wondering if there is a dvd drive that can both read and burn Xbox360 games?

Was thinking along plextor lines, I'm looking at getting the best for this job and not too concerned about price. Also it should be SATA if that doesn't affect quality at all.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

there is no current drive that can read and burn 360 games
Samsung SH-D162C with Kreon Firmware is the only pc drive that can read origanal 360 games, you can buy these with the firmware on already but it's not hard to do, not sure if you can get these in Sata
the Pioner 111d is the most recommended drive for burning game, its what i use and they do a Sata version.
most othere dule layer burners will work fine.

KREON Firmware compatible Drives (AFAIK):

PATA
Samsung: SH-D162C ~DUH~
Toshiba:   TS-H352C

SATA
Samsung SH-D163A
Toshiba:  TS-H353A

Again AFAIK all the Drive listed are DVD-ROM ONLY!
So you'll need a decent DVD Burner that can handle DL Media.
Most newer Models should be more the able to handle the DVD+R\DL Format by now.
Most of these Drive should also have Firmware that will also do auto Booktypeing to DVD-ROM as well...

-list of PC drive that allow ripping in the pinned, could have been easily researched (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) that none of them burn,

it is not a matter of what brand is the best in peoples eyes, it is a matter of what kreon firmware is available.  this limits you to the 4 drives that Ichijoe listed (which are basically the same drives with different faceplates - the sh series have a round button and the ts series have a rectangular button and interface) and i have used all 4 variants and they all work exactly the same - the rippping time from all 4 drives using the same orginal will be within seconds of each other.

also remember that plextor isn't the plextor it use to be and i do believe now that they rebadge somebody else's drives, so it is not like it was in the scsi days (which i still have one of their 40max scsi cd-roms - one of the best ripping cd-roms still), so no need to spend the money on the plextor name when it is a rebadge job.

the burner that seems to get a lot of attention for the burning of games is the pionneer 111d as stated by mr-blonde as it auto booksets to dvd-rom.

in the case of the dvd-rom, you really don't have a choice you basically have an 1 drive that has  a couple different setups.  the nice part about this is that this drive does what it is suppose to do very well and the kreon firmware is mature enough so you basically don't have to worry about it smile.gif

its a shame that the 8164 drive has'nt been fully utilized yet
as that potentially can do everthing the kreos firmware patch allows on the 162
the 8164 can already extract the game sections etc on xbox/360 its just the 2nd layer and teh SS it has 'issues' with

but plus this drive can do Wii games
so at least we would have a all in one ripping drive (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
but the creaters of the existing firmware seems to have abandend the project (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Either way, it's not like DVD Burners or DVD-ROM drives cost a fortune these days.  You can easily afford to purchase both drives.
