Easier Dump Method?
« on: January 20, 2007, 11:55:00 PM »

I've been doing some research on how to backup my Xbox 360 games. The only real method I've been able to find is the hot swap method (hooking up an internal DVD drive outside the case and exposing the laser, then hot swapping the disc when needed).

Has a simpler, more efficient way been developed yet or is this the current standard procedure for doing backups at the moment?

Thanks!

You can use your 360 drive, or a SH-D152C(or variant) with Kreon's firmware.  Either way, this is a backup question....so I'm moving it

SH D162C (every letter and number must be the same, not 152 or not 162A...)

and yes it is a great buy

Thanks for all the info everyone. It seems I definitely have an exciting new project to work on for this week. Now I just gotta get down to making those plastic keys from my spindle case (that's probably gonna take me a few tries smile.gif).

I just have a few additional question about the drives:

1) What's the differences in the SH D162C drive Vs. the Pioneer 111 drive that seems to be the current favorite?

2) Do both drives offer automatic bit-setting? I'd like to keep the whole process as simplified as possible, if possible.

Thanks!

The sh-d162c is only a dvd-rom (like the one in your x360), not a burner.

It will help you extract the entire game with one click in XBCreator. It cannot burn.

The Pioneer can only extract the game partition but not the ss.bin.
If you go only with a pioneer you still need to open your x360, and use the x360 drive to get the ss.bin.

Yeah, I definitely want to avoid that. After I flash my firmware on my 360 I don't want to open the case back up unless absolutely necessary.

So, correct me if I'm wrong but here is what I'll need in a nutshell:

1) I'll crack open my case to determine which drive I have

2) Flash with the corresponding firmware

3) Acquiring a SH D162C drive and flash with the updated firmware (to allow the drive to now read 360 discs)

4) Using the SH D162C drive and the correct apps, I should be able to rip everything I'll need from my original 360 disc to my hard-drive in order to burn a backup

5) I currently have two Mad-Dog DL +-RW burners. If I configure the bit-settings correctly, should I be able to burn the backup with this burner on a +R DL DVD?

6) At this point I should be able to pop the backup disc into my 360 and load as if it were my original retail disc?

If I'm off anywhere just let me know. I still plan to do lots of reading before attempting any of the above.

Thanks!

1) to 3) OK
4) you can use XBCreator or schtrom 3.1 to rip games. Burn with imgburn on verbatim at 2.4x (or 4x with a pioneer).

5) Mad dog burner are often renamed  NEC burners. That should help you find info in the  compatibility thread (here) and bitsetting soft (in theory not needed for x360 samsung)

6) get good media it is a good investment (post)

as always good reading in Backup Faq - Everything* You Need To Know PLEASE READ BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS!

When making backups of my movies on DVD I use a combination of DVD Decrypter/DVD Shrink. When I'm ready to burn I ONLY use Verbatim DVD-Rs that are printable on the surface.

I know that for gaming, I'll need to purchase DL DVD+R as opposed to -R. Is Verbatim still considered an excellent choice of media (I NEVER have issues with Verbatim when it comes to burning movies as I have in the past with other brands).

Also, if I wanted to buy printable surfaces for printing labels, could that cause problems with the 360 (either printing labels with an inkjet printer or light-scribe)?

I've be getting some mixed signals about this issue. Some places I've read it's a good idea to configure the bitsettings of your burner BEFORE you create your backups to ensure higher compatibility.

I've also read that with the current methods it's really unnecessary and can sometimes cause more compatibility issues than it fixes.

What's the real advantage and is it really necessary or not as far as creating functional backups?

Thanks!

Plse look at the Backup Faq - Everything* You Need To Know PLEASE READ BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS! , you will find the answers in one of the first three topics there. In short get verbatim it is worthed.

On dvd-rom, try it. I doubt that setting it will cause more harm than not. you may have to try it.

Hope it helps

If you check the BST page on these forums you will see people selling these drives. They work great, takes me about 25 minutes to dump a full game. Check it out

I've read the information above and it was a great resource! I still have one additional question about the Verbatim that didn't seem to be covered in the above links.

Verbatim sells a spindle 20 pack of printable DVD+R DL (a white printable surface on top that can be used in an inkjet printer).

I was hoping to use these so I can print labels on them. However, I'm worried that the ink may effect my 360. Could this cause potential problems?

Thanks!

Printable discs are fine, I'd recommend letting them dry for a few hours before using them though. I usually just pull it out the burner and put it in the 360 long enough to make sure I've made a successful backup, then pop it in the printer and let it print, then usually leave it overnight to dry, next day they are fully dry to the touch, so no worries about ink once you let it dry. I would not put one in the 360 in any less than 2 hours. You can also use a hairdryer to dry it faster if you want.  laugh.gif

I have no problem letting it air dry overnight. I just wanted to confirm that I'm ok using printables with the ink in the 360.

Sounds great!
