Does anyone know the difference (specifically for purposes of burning backups) between the Pioneer 112D and the Pioneer 112BK?

I see a lot of recommendations for the 111D and 112D, as well as mentions for similar models 112 and 112L, but the only Pioneer models I can find at my local electronics store are the 112BK and 212BK.

Any idea if either of those would do the job just as well as the usual models?

All the BK means is that the drive is Black

I recently purchased a Pioneer DVR-216D (Firmware 1.09) and started having burning problems right away.  I didn't know if it was the media I was using (Verbatim) or the drive itself, so I tested burning CD and DVD data discs, which worked fine, but with DVD+R DL, I'd get the 'power calibration' error before much of anything was written.  I tested it out with ImgBurn, CDclone, and Nero with DL discs from two different Verbatim spindles, with the same results.  Is it possible that the drive can burn CD and DVD formats, but not DL?  Has that come up before?

The drives are relatively cheap, so I have a 116D on the way, just in case it really is just this 216D drive that is faulty, but maybe I just have the wrong FW or something...?

"Hi i bought a pioneer DVR-116D based on posts about its burn quality on dual layer discs i am getting error on dual layer verbatims - i have updated the firmware to 1.09"

Not sure of your problem but I also own a DVR-116D with its firmware updated to 1.09 and can burn Verbatim media fine at 2.4x with no problems.

??? How have you done the backup?
-which software,
-and drive to rip?

It says "user specified" but its not actually specified by the user itself. I think this value is calculated by ImgBurn itself (since it always says something like this message in the log when the setting in the Build> Page 1 is set to Layer Break for DL Media > Calculate Optimal).

And btw the Optiarc 7200A (and also 7200S) can be flashed with Liggy's firmware to give it bitsetting capabilities. Excellent allaround dvd burner, too.

Hi Benzetzu,

I also got this drive (DVR-216DBK) and I am now getting "Power Calibration Area Error, CDB: Send DVD Structure"

I currently can't burn any type of media or data. I tried the latest firmware, google, etc.

Did you get it to work?
