I have burned up to 8x on the Made In Singapore DL Verbatim or Sony discs with no problems.

Quality scores depends on highest PIE amount, it's not really accurate in a sense that if you have a spike of high PIE it drops the number down to 0. What that means is that even though 99.9% of the disc is great, there's gonna be that .01% that's probably not readable. With that being said, 8.7GB of data, it really depends on that .01% and where it is, most of the time it probably won't matter.

The other thing to look at is the "average PIE". it really tells you over all how good the burn is.

The reason you get a spike @ 50% is that all DL behaves like that, at and after the layer break the error just sky rocket. pretty wierd IMO.

Not really.  It all makes sense.  When a DL disc plays on most players there is a pause as it jumps from one layer to the next.  Therefore in something as sensitive as a scan process that same pause during a layer jump is interpreted as errors.  Incidentally you are also forgetting about PIF.  IMHO far more indicative of quality.

The layer break itself is not where you'll find problems, as there is no data stored in the layer break at all.

It all depends on a number of factors, parity for sure is ONE such factor, but then you have Jitter etc come into play aswell.

Some liteon burners can read back jitter, beta, etc readings, but not all. I'm guessing it is the same in the plextor came.

BenQ burners are up there aswell, personally i find them better for scanning than the liteons, when we're talking the 1620, 1640, 1650(and 1655) burners.

My problem is that I only have a laptop available to me. I was thinking about the external version of the pioneer 112.. or potentially enclosing a drive properly.

even though i dont know anything about the topic, it just feels as though an external drive would preform pretty poorly.

opinions?

I can't keep relying on my friend to help me create backups any longer!

I got the Pioneer DVR-115DSV, went to try straight away to backup an XBOX360 game as people say pioneers should not need firmare upgrade but failed. I tried using Schtrom360Xtract_V3.4 but did not achieve anything.
I m not quite sure what to do, on the rpc1 site for firmwares mentioned in the first post i could only find Pioneer DVR-115 - 1.18 RPC-2. I m pretty sure this would not work with mine.
Any ideas on how I can proceed? other software/firmware and so on?

I have a similar question. Can this DVD writer actually backup games too or will I need a diffrent DVD reader to create backups and then use this writer to burn backups.

Can someone point me to a pioneer 112L burner with lightscribe. All I've been able to come across are the 112 and the 112d. Pioneer's site has a lightscribe burner but it is a 113kg. Thanks in advance!

I had the same issue as you, I tried the Pioneer 111 which always gave me mixed results.

Over the last week I have been trying out a new setup for my laptop and I did my first burn yesterday.

Yes, unfortunatley I have both the 111D & 112L. The 111D works flawlessly with pretty much any media (apart from the 10x datawrite that were complete $hite - never buy DL's on special offer)

My 112L fails every burn at 50% - even with verbatims. I've only had it since November last year, but I lost the damn receipt for it, so no return! Maybe just my luck to get the dodgy one outta the batch.

Just a quick one, has anyone else had this problem with the DVR-112L?

I've tried the following media:
Verbatim 2.4x
RiDisc
ZeroDefex
AONE & Mirror Media

All fail at 50% just as the drive is switching to the second layer.

AND FINALLY, another question. I see lots of people using Nero CD/DVD speed to test the quality of their burns/drives, and all seem to read the entire disc (layers 0 & 1).
I have 4 Pioneer drives, DVR-108, DVR-109, DVR-111D, and DVR-112L and none of them will run the test past the first layer, the program just gives me an error and seems to halt reading at exactly 3737Mb into the disc. I know that my DVR-111D is fine, not had any trouble. I just can't get Nero to read past the first layer ----- STRANGE!

Anyone any ideas?

113Kg? Jeez, thats weighs more than me! You can just buy either the DVR-112 or DVR-112D and cross-flash the drive with the DVR-112L firmware which has lightscribe capabilities, I still have the firmware flash pack on my desktop. I've found that most of the DVR-112 (D)(L) & (DBK) can be cross-flashed between the different drive firmwares. Check out http://www.rpc1.org, or search google for "The Dangerous Brothers"

Like I said above, most of the 112 series burners can be cross-flashed between different firmwares, meaning you can buy a 112D and cross-flash it to the 112L firmware. There are only a few small differences between the types, eg. one firmware causes windows to detect the drive as a DVDRAM. The firmware I use on my dead/dying 112L has lightscribe capabilities. I've done quite a bit of firmware tinkering with DVDRW and have a fair knowledge of Pioneers right back from the DVR-A03 (God rest its soul).

If anyone wants to try a different firmware on their DVR-111 or DVR-112, gimme a shout as I have some cross-flash packs for these drives.

Hi i bought a pioneer DVR-116D based on posts about its burn quality on dual layer discs i am getting error on dual layer verbatims - i have updated the firmware to 1.09

any ideas - is there a newer firmware?
what do you figure the issue is??
