Pioneer 111 - Key Elements For X360 Use
« on: January 12, 2007, 08:10:00 PM »

The Pioneer DVR-111 (also retailed under DVR-710 ), the pioneer 112* (also retailed under DVR-1810), and the SATA version Pioneer 212 are the crowd favorite at XS for a good reason, they are great burners.
Here are some quick info on the Pioneers ,
  1. Pioneer burners sets booktype (bitsetting) automatically to DVD-ROM for Double Layer +R, thus no need to change anything if you have a Pioneer.
  2. The firmware on your Pioneer 111 should not be a problem if it is 1.23+ (even prior version should work). Upgrade it only if you have a problem since it is much easier to upgrade than the opposite. You can find the firmwares for Pioneer at RPC1.org.
  3. It is also a good drive for those using wxripper with the emergency hole (like most Pioneer are).
You will find here the CdFreaks full review of the pioneer 111, and here the full review of the pioneer 112.
The 111/112 series has three models: The 111/112D that burns +/-R double layer up to 8X (112  @ 10x  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ); The 111/112 which adds the DVD-RAM feature ; and the 111/112L which adds DVD-Ram and lightscribe. The additional features of the 111/112 and 111/112L will have little to no impact on X360 burning.
Previous Pioneer are also excellent burners, and the double layer burning started on the 108/A08 model.

Finally there is no way to stress enough the need for good media in support of your Pioneer and on that you must read this post by Jesterrace777.  When a system reads a dvd there is a limit to the number of errors it can correct without calling it quit and declaring the DVD unusable. Below are two quality scans (Lower errors is better!!). You will find the performance of a Verbatim (top) and a Ritek (marketed under RiData, memorex, TDK, Some of Sony...) and as you can see the the Ritek is off the chart I use. It does not mean it will not work, but it certainly increases the chances of a problem. In conclusion threat your Pioneer (and your X360 drive)well by feeding it decent food (as perceived by a burner obviously!!!).

With the Pioneer 111/112, burning your verbatim at 4X appears to be an adequate choice. The Pioneer will burn them at all speed from 2.4X to 8X:  Slower speed (2.4X) do not seem to produce better burns and higher speed (6X and 8X) apparently introduce slghtly longer loading time.

(IMG:http://www.geocities.com/sosotiit/scan3.png)

NOTE: I recieved a PM as to why I used the Liteon 165H6S in the scans above. It is the only little weakness I see of the Pioneer 111, not being a good scanner.  You should not care about this unless you are real serious about doing quality scans of your burns, see posts 2 and 3 here.

*Yes, the Pioneer 112/212 is also performing very well. The firmware delivered with the unit seems to support well burning for X360 games. Also note that the 112/212 will burn single layer dvd up to 18X (as opposed to 16X by the 111).

Hope it helps,
rgds, soso

great info.  Hopefully people looking for a new burner will read this and not have to ask "what is the best burner to get?"

Just ordered myself. smile.gif

Late to the party on the 360 scene, and this tutorial provided me with one less thing to research.

Thanks!

Good summary of the Pioneer 111 drive.  This thread and Jesterace777's media thread should be stickied since they are FAQs.  Edit:  It's nice to see that the links to the 2 threads are already stickied.

He forgot to add that the Pioneer 111D is also dirt cheap and widely available. wink.gif  Either as the OEM drive the 111D or the retail model the DVR-710.

Not sure how it does as far as 360 discs are concerned but here is a general overview of the burner:

http://club.cdfreaks...ad.php?t=201109

Given the fact that every Pioneer model since the 108 has done well with the 360, I don't see why the 112 would be any different but then again I have been surprised before.

Absolutely fantastic burner!

I bought one two days ago as my lite-on was having trouble burning any game on any media . So far I have had no problems with it yet. It definately overpowers my old lite-on LH-18A1H drive and he booktype (as always with the new pioneers) is auto set as DVD-Rom. Working straight out of the box...

Good to hear a personal experience.  I've always had good luck with Pioneer burners.  I have had a 105, 109 and a 111 and they have all been great, so I am glad to see some evidence that they are continuing to make decent burners.

Hi guys

Just ordered a Pioneer DVR 112D - and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it?

I have read as much as possible about the 111, but they were unavailible so i got the one up from it.

Do you think it will be pretty much the same? (which is what i expect)

Just so its not all take - i will be posting my personal experiences with it so you guys can add it to a list or something tongue.gif

peace.

here we go again!!!

try it, if it does not work, upgrade. As a general rule generic FW on pioneer is fine.
and zero research,  it was just down the page (merge now)
