Dvd-R DL Backup Success!
« on: January 08, 2007, 10:39:00 AM »

OK I know that this sounds strange but I got for free 5 Verbatim DVD-R DL disks and I decided to make a backup of my RainbowSix Vegas disk just to test.

I have xtreme 5.2 and it works!!! (actually it loads perfectly I loaded the first mission but I havent had time to play it more).

So does this mean that DVD-R DL disks work or that after a few levels (after passing the layer break) the disk will fail???

I have a Samsung ms28 and the disk was burned with imgburn.

So does anybody know what is going on?

NOT DVD-R SINGLE LAYER

DVD-R DUAL LAYER

THE DUAL LAYER DISK WAS USED TO BACKUP A XBOX 360 GAME

That's nice, I guess but at least here in the states D/L DVD-R is almost twice the price of D/L DVD+R which works well with ALL drives and applications.  Good to know for future reference though. wink.gif

Dont forget to tick the "Layer Jump Recording" option in the Settings/Write in ImgBurn before writing

I dont know if it makes any difference but I used it when I burned mine (also after some internet search that I did it is the closest thing that the DVD-R DL has to the Layer Break of the +R DL's)

Here DVD-R DL are cheaper and more available than +R DL disks!!

Last evening I just made Halo 2 backup on Verbatim DVD-R Single Layer and it works, this is after I made 7 coasters experimenting on making XBOX 1 backup game on single layer disc.

Since I don't have XBOX, what I did was made 1:1 copy with XBC using my brand new Samsung SH-D162C (bought it for $20) and then open the ISO with wx1.6 and extract all the files into a folder and used XDVDMulleterBeta1 with Halo 2 NTSC Optimise layout file to make the DVD5 backup iso and burnt it with CloneCD with my Benq DW1640.

SO it is definetely working I burned FIFA 2007 on a Verbatim DVD-R DL and it also works I used Imgburn and the only options I changed were the layer break to the one the game uses (in my case 1913760) and ticked the option below it "Use Layer Jump Recording".

I used an LG drive the GSA-E10L.

I burned FIFA 2007 at first on a DVD+R DL on the same drive but it didn't work (I got the dirty, scratched disk error) and the I decided to use a DVD-R DL and as I said above it works I played for like a half hour and loaded different games with different teams and it worked during all that time.

SO does anybody have any objections or suggestions to make?

If not I think that we can officially declare Verbatims DVD-R DL as a working bakup option.

PS If one of the moderators could change the title of the topic to show that it really works.

Did not read all the thread, but has someone played a game from A to Z to confirm that passing the layerbreak will work?

anyway, removed the ? in the title.

thanks for all the test,

Ok to anyone still interested I finished from start to end

RainBow Six Vegas from my backup disk a

Dual Layer DVD-R

and everything worked fine

SO DVD-R DL WORK AS GOOD AS +R DL DISKS ON A TS-H943

Al

PS I now it took me to long but I had a dead m/b after an RROD and it took me 5+ months to have the money fix it and have time to play again.

PS I finished the rest of the game on a ixtreme 1.2c firmware

I keep a list of the thread I am curious of the outcome, yours was there and I almost removed it last week thinking that it was dead. Happy to see it works, and a huge thanks for coming back on this.

So basically
-put layerbreak 1913760
-use Use Layer Jump Recording

On what firmware have you tried that, if not iXtreme 1.2, can you confirm if you ever try with it  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

sosotiit Thanks for the interest

As I said on the second PS I finished the game on a iXtreme 1.2 rev C (I started the game on a xtreme 5.2) It worked perfectly on both firmwares.

I also played for about an hour FIFA 2007 as stated above FEAR UNLEASHED and BATTLEFIELD 2 MODERN COMBAT.

The settings on ImgBurn are as you described them "layerbreak 1913760, Use Layer Jump Recording"

The disks used where VERBATIM DVD-R DUAL LAYER made in Singapore with reorder number 43542

I used two different recorders a PIONEER 111L and a LG GSA-E10L and backups on both worked the same

If a moderator wants to change the Topic to reflect that it also works with iXtreme 1.2c I  would be grateful.

Al
