I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt Memorex is the worst Media in the world. It is made by multiple manufactores that memorex contracts with. You never know what you are going to get. Also most of the time it made by CMC, look them up and see the ratings people give them. Lets put it like this, the 200 dvd's i burned with Memorex media only 9 work today, and this was 3 years ago I burned them at slow speed and kept great care of them. Actually Ritek makes the D/L media for Memorex as of right now, but you are correct that you never know what to expect from one batch to the next.  The Samsung definitely is more forgiving for media but it still can't fix all of the quality control issues that Memorex discs are known for.  I don't know that I would call Memorex the worst stuff out there (I can think of several Chinese/Hong Kong Manufacturers that are worse) but they definitely would be among my last choices if I was forced to pick up media.
