Backup Problems On Hitachi 0078
« on: December 22, 2006, 04:04:00 PM »

You say stock firmware on you pioneer, is it bitsetting to DVD-ROM? (just to confirm, but I think it does)
you can check your burned disc with many soft  (dvdinfopro, Nero speed, Imgburn).
I believe (not 100% sure) that Samsung Firmware allows DVD that are not bitset to DVD-Rom, whereas Hitachi does not. If not it could be the media, are you using good quality like verbatim burned at 2.4x?

Strange, Obviously if you have done so many, you know how to do it biggrin.gif ,
I have a 47 (on 1.6)  and I tried a 78 (1.6 using toolbox v3.0),  and all backup played in both.
Might be a calibration issue specific to that unit!!

Backup Problems On Hitachi 0078

I thought I was the only one having this problem. I flashed my Hitachi 0078FK this past Monday. Once I did, I burned a backup from my Sony DRU-800A after having set the book type to DVD-ROM through DVD Info, onto A Memorex (Ritek) DL disc @ 2.4x. The backup played greap for about 3 days. I burned several others up until about Wednesday all with no problems.

Then Wednesday night, I dropped in one of my backups, it starts to load and then II get a dirty disc error. I tried ALL of my previously working backups with the same results.

I looked through the forums, decided to chalk it up to media issues. I went out last night and picked up some Verbatims. I reburned two of my backups this morning on the Verbatim media. One worked, the other didn't. I'm not sure if it's just a bad disc or not.

I'm getting a little concerned at this point. I'm thinking I may have to tweak the pot on my drive to help it along, but has anyone ever done that on the 78's?

Will the setting basically need to be about the same as it would be for any of the other Hitachi drives?

I'm also glad that I'm not the only one with this issue!  I don't know why the Hitachi 0078 drives are having this issue.  It's happened to two I've modded already.  No issues with other drives.  I don't know about the pot tweak either.  I've adjusted the Samsung ms25 and the Hitachi 46 and 47 using between 2900-3100 ohms.  I figure I'll do the same for the 0078.  I'll post results after I do it.

Alright, here's the update.  I think the problem stemmed from a combination of both a weak laser, and smudged (fingerprints) discs.  One backup started working again after I cleaned it off.  Another still wouldn't work (even in my ms25) after a cleaning, so I decided to do a pot tweak.  The original value was 3560 ohms.  I went ahead and lowered it to 2950 ohms.  Now the backup that still wouldn't work in my ms25 now works in the Hitachi 0078.  So I'm going to draw the conclusion of a weak laser.  But of course, fingerprint smudges don't help either!
