Nec 7170a - Good Or Bad

Is the 18x NEC 7170a a good bet if I need to order a new burner?  Can it do backups and all?  Has anyone tried it?  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone's got any insight on this, please reply.  I'd like to order a burner tonight from newegg so that I can maybe have it before the weekend comes.  All I have right now is the burner that came with my HP and it does not support bitsettings.    So does anyone have any insight on the drive I listed above or is there a better suggestion in that price range?

Depends on which DVD-ROM you have in your XBOX.  The Hitachi can be fussy.  While it is true that the mediacheck firmware can fix a number of compatibility issues, it isn't 100%.  Bottom line if you want a drive that gets along well with all XBOX DVD-ROMs by nature then go for the Pioneer 111D.  Haven't been much of a fan of the late model NEC drives (not just for 360 apps either).

Thank you for your reply.  I will go with the pioneer then.  I've had both the NEC and pioneer over the past 2 years - in fact 2 of each.  And, one of each brand stopped burning and had to be replaced.  lol  who cares at these prices though because the next one always burns faster.  Thanks for the tip, going with the pioneer.

stay away from that drive. and the rest of the 7000 NEC line. theyre not kosher. the 3540 and 3550 were two of the best drives ever though. pioneer 111d is spiff as well.

Hitachi 47D XBOX 360 DRIVE [OPA 2.1]
NEC 4551A with latest retail firmware
CloneCD

I had nothing but trouble with this drive, every verb a coaster.
Soon as I put in a 111D bingo! Not a single bad burn.
