Make Backups In Linux?
« on: November 19, 2006, 12:01:00 PM »

Is there anyone making 360 backups in Linux?  I just switched to using ubuntu and was wondering what is the burning utility of choice for this task.  Are there any utilities for setting book-type and the layer break?

Have you tried running CloneCD in Wine or using Codeweaver's Crossover ?

Not sure if NERO works in Windows, but there is a Nero Linux which may work. Anyone make backups using nero in windows successfully ?

Ah true.  I checked the Wine database if clone cd runs in it or not but it dosent say anything either way.  I guess i'll try that and see what happens.  I think i read somewhere on here that some people use GNOMEbaker but you need to get into the command line to change some settings.  I guess i gotta do some more digging.

On a side note however, NEROlinux seems to be a quick option since they offer a fully functional demo with a limited time period.  I hope we can use Nero for burning backups.

Ah yes, the thread you refer to is this one:

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=537638

The only problem is that the link for the patching utility is broken in that thread. I found a different link to the file though:

http://www.bewhere.c...bpatch_java.rar

Apparently this utility works because it converts Xtreme type ISOs to wxripper ISOs, which is good because growisofs supposedly dosent work with Xtreme type backups.

I'll see if this all works tonight and i'll post my findings.

Thanks, that's good information.

I used newsbinpro 4.32 under crossover 5.03 to do the downloads. Unfortunately I am too used to newsbinpro, I did test some free news clients, both BNZ2 and Klibido seemed like good alternatives and free.

I used QuickPar under Crossover, however there is a free quickpar which comes with Ubuntu called Par2

Also Rar Archiving seems built into Nautilus which looks pretty neat. Complete solution and quite easy to do. I didn't like the way the unrar did a lot of I/O, I will probably use WinRar under Crossover.

Success!  I was able to make my backups using Linux.  What surprised me was that i thought growisofs was just a command to adjust the write settings, thats why i was asking people what burning programs they were using.  I had no idea that it was a set and burn command all in one shot.  Very handy.

The first backup i made was a dud because the book-type wasn't set to dvd-rom.  I had a little trouble with bitsetting at first because the command: "dvd+rw-booktype -dvd-rom -unit+r /dev/hdc" was returning an error message that stated that it didnt detect a compatible dvd+rw drive.  Putting sudo in front of the command fixed that problem though (in ubuntu at least).

I didn't have to use the imgbpatch utility yet so i don't really have any comments for it.

Make sure you do a 'file' on your iso file, if it doesn't say it is a iso, don't try burn it else you will be wasting your dvd.

Extreme ISO's won't work without the imagebgpatch/java util. Read this forum

can you share exactly how you used the flags to set booktype? Are they flags for growisofs?

He was using the command: dvd+rw-booktype

media1 ~ # which dvd+rw-booktype
/usr/bin/dvd+rw-booktype

media1 ~ # dvd+rw-booktype
Usage: dvd+rw-booktype [-dvd-rom-spec|-dvd+rw-spec|-dvd+r-spec|-inq] \
       [-media|-unit|-unit+rw|-unit+r] /dev/dvd

media1 ~ # dvd+rw-booktype -inq /dev/dvd
The unit will brand DVD+R media as DVD-ROM
The unit will format DVD+RW media as DVD-ROM

media1 ~ #

Bear in mind this was ran on a box with a very old dvd+ drive that does not even support D/L

The command he ran above was:

dvd+rw-booktype -dvd-rom -unit+r /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc was his burner.
