your laptop dvd writer has to have bitsetting which I don't think it does. But then again I could be wrong. Find out the model, and see if it has bitsetting if not maybe there is a firmware fix. If that fails then you are out of luck.

You won't be able to "Rip" a game with you're laptop DVD drive no matter what, you either need to extract the XBOX360 drive and hook it up to a PC OR get the Samsun sh-d162c drive with Kreon v0.81 firmware flash.

Other than that you are out of luck for ripping, now writing is where the bitsetting comes into play.

Sounds like you need one of these so that you can connect your drive your laptop via usb and a power supply to power your xbox 360 drive

What if you have an external DVD recorder that supports bitsetting & dual layer which you connect to your laptop using an IDE/SATA ADAPTER, to,

1) RIP using hotswapping technique
2) BURN

Also, i've read that you don't have to have bitsetting on your burners anymore to have a successful burn, true or false?

this is true. the bitsetting on my lappy's drive is DVD+R DL  for my 360 games and they all work flawlessly and are fully stealthed.

Really, i've been trying to read up on all this stuff being a noob and i thought there were 3 ways to burn a game:

1) Easiest: Using of course a KREON drive

2) Moderately easy: Using a dvd burner that can burn dual layer and bitsetts, but the burner itself does not have to be a kreon drive, mainly because you will use the HOTSWAP method to rip the game to your CPU HDD then use a ImageBurn to Burn the file to a normal DVD disc.

3) Hardest:  Open up your xbox and connect the dvd drive to your computer to rip and burn

so back to my question...

Can you not use an external DVD burner connected to your LAPTOP using an IDE/SATA > USB adapter to rip and burn an xbox 36o game.  This method being #2 in the list above.

.... or is the connection via IDE/SATA > USB adapter not a good one making the burn impossible or bad...

thanks for the input....

ok

1) kreon drives cant burn games. only rip them

2)you can only rip games with x360 drives and kreon drives

3)your pc wont accept your x360 drive without the 0800 fw and cant burn discs its a dvd-rom not a dvd+rw-dl

ok for your normal question. you can use an external and internal technically. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)  you must rip from x360 drive or kreon than can burn with any dl dvd burner that works. as long as your rips and media are good the burner should hurt to not be a pioneer drive... but its suggested currently i use my laptops drive and it works a treat for burning. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)  i hope thats a bit more clear.

no , it is very true.
With Wxripper how would you get your SS and stealth file?

To address a few points:

There are two separate issues here - RIPPING (copying, whatever), and BURNING.

With a laptop, the best you can do with the default hardware is BURN games.

To RIP them, you'll need one of the above mentioned tools. In your case, I'd recommend an external Kreon drive.

To BURN them, you'll have to have a compatible burner. Please note, you do NOT have to bitset to DVD-ROM when you burn games. My backups have been burned using my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1525 with a TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L632H ATA Device), and I haven't once burned a game using bitsetting. Every game is stealthed perfectly and runs beautifully.

Also, you'll need the right media. You mentioned the biggest disk you had was a "LOTR ROTK" disc - that's a copy of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. It's not a burnable disc. You'll need DVD+R DL (DVD +R dual layer) media, preferably Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. They're somewhat expensive, but you can find decent deals on them from time to time.

Once you've got the right equipment - a device to RIP the games, a device to BURN the games (there are lists online you can check for compatibility, or just ask around), and media to burn the games to, you can move on to the next step: software.

Different members here will tell you different things (though there is an "approved" set), but I would recommend IMGburn as a burning tool. All you have to do is set the layerbreak (tutorials are available), and burning runs smoothly.

Would hammer a bit more out, but I'm a touch tired right now.

This is not true at all.  I recently bought a laptop Blu Ray drive for the purpose of backing up blue rays, I bought a USB 2.0 external case for it.  Now, I have this drive hooked up to my laptop and thought I would see how easy it would be to take the top off of it.  So I took the top of the external case off of it, unscrewed 3 (yes only 3) screws and the top of it came right off.  I have been ripping my 360 games with this for the past two days on a laptop, I just leave the top off completely, working like a charm, well except for LO disk 4.

A laptop is nothing more than a compacked version of  a full size PC.  So if you got a usb to sata or ide cable for your full sized drive (and a molex power adapter) its exactly the same.  I would make two suggestions...that is if you want to take this route.

Head over to ebay and buy a laptop slim drive, DVD Burner.  They are cheap, just make sure they are newer, cause older ones XP wont recognize it as a DVD, just a CD Rom.  And buy yourself the slim drive external case, it comes with the cord and everything to hook it up.

Here is the link to the one I bought for about $12

Ebay USB External Slim Optical Drive Case.

Then all you need is a good dvd writer.  And swapping is real easy too.

Hope this helps.
