Did you rip the correct ss.bin off the originals?  If you did that right and you merged the correct ss.bin and .iso together then I don't see why your having a problem.

Nope, I ripped a new SS.bin file and tried to burn hitman.  The rip had no errors and I was using a DVD layout file posted on metaphaze's guide.  No go.  MY DISK STILL DIDN'T WORK!!!!  that means I have an even 10 coasters.  What the hell is going on.

Try using the ss merger program. It will tell you what the ss needed is. I get different ss from drive tools and the getss.exe so it's hit or miss. But if you have 2 red boxes in ss merger than you know it's not going to work and atleast you will save the $2.50 on the disk.

I have been using SS merger.  The problem is there are always red boxes, even on the burns that worked, because I'm using WX ripper.  I'm pretty sure that the size of the rip, and therefor the MD5 checksum, will vary based on you layout and the DVD you use.

I have a 47DJ and I burned about 10 coasters before I had any success, I followed metaphaze's guide, got a new pioneer 111d and all works great for me, i have backed up oblivion and COD2 no worries. I have learned that getss.exe doesnt work correctly with any Hitachi drive and Drive tools is a much better bet.  Also, when using ss merger 1.6 the red boxes make no difference, mine have always been red and 3/3 copies work great for me.

stick to wxRipper, Drivetools + IMGburn in my opinion

Yeah I also use wxripper w/ a hitachi 47dh. I get the red too but my backups always work. if I get a crc error I never replace the letters. I always do the math and change the layout file then re-ripp the game. ur file size should be 7.05 sometimes people forget to check that, or they re-ripp without actually loading the new layout file. And of course Always make sure you have the original disc VERY CLEAN!!! Ive made some coasters where I thought that the ss was bad only to find out that the original disc had a small smudge. Last But not least If you keep going the way you are you will have lost the $ it would have taken to get a shiney new pioneer 111d on your coasters alone. Its worth the investment 4 that drive. Hope this helps

I have just made a working copy of Blazing Angels WWII using my normal setup, this is now the 5th good copy I have made since I got my pioneer 111D.
With regard to the earlier post about SS merger and the red boxes and such, here is what I have found so far.
As long as you follow these few easy steps you can prevent burning a coaster.

1. Once you have ripped your ISO with WXripper make sure the ISO is 7.05 gb
2. Load up the wx360 program and make sure the ISO is readable and gives no errors.
3. Load up SS merger 1.6. Check the md5 online and you should always get a number of ISO's found. (this has always been the case for me, of course if it's a really new game it might not happen, but its a safe bet.) If you get no ISO's found there is normally a problem.

I have never seen the boxes in SS merger go green, and I have never worried about slecting the correct ISO from the drop down menu's (languages's PAL, NTSC etc..) . As long as the ISO is recognised I add my SS.bin (ripped with drive tools) and then merge.

Finally I always burn with IMGburn and specify a layer break at 1913760.  I have now started using cheaper media and even these are working, I have used Ridata media for Oblivion and Blazing Angels WWII and both work great.

I have found making backups is really easy, I did however try about 5 different DVD drives for ripping and then bought the pioneer 111D.

Hope some of this helps
