Hp 740i/b & 840b Lightscribe Crossflashable With Lg Firmware
« on: August 25, 2006, 05:16:00 AM »

Some info first:
Burner: HP DVD740i/b internal
Firmware crossflash: OK
Burn X360 backups: Haven't tried yet
Played DVD movie: OK, I didn't break my burner!

Files(Legal Download):
Firmware 4166b v1.0
Firmware 4166b v1.02

I guess in order to make backups of X360 games you gotta use a burner that allows booktype setting. The HP DVD740i/b (not too sure about the 840b, but heard they were the same just different FW) is an OEM of the LG GSA-4166B, but doesn't allow for booktype settings so you gotta flash it. This post should be relevant. Plus I'm bored so I'll write this up.

So if anyone has a HP DVD740i/b & DVD840b burner and wanna flash with a firmware that allows book type setting:

Check the DVD burner's label and see if it says something like HL GCA-4166B(That's what mine has).

Download the firmware for an LG GSA-4166B burner both version 1.0 and 1.02 (Links above or try the LG website; v1.02 is the latest).

Grab the .bin file from v1.02 by extracting it from the .exe file with WinRar, and save it in a new folder named (i.e. FLASH).

Extract the .dll file and the FWLoadX.exe file from v1.0 and put them both in the FLASH folder.

So you should now have three files in FLASH, the .dll, .exe, and .bin file.

Disable network/internet, firewalls, anti-virus and all other programs.

Run FWLoadX.exe and a window should pop up. Make sure your HP drive is selected. It will tell you which firmware is currently on your burner.
Click the giant OPEN button and select the .bin file.
Make sure your PC is running fine and press UPDATE.
Once complete, it's gonna ask you to reboot but press CANCEL and close the updater.
Goto device manager and look for your DVD drive. Right-click and press UNINSTALL.
Reboot the PC.
Reinstall Lightscribe. Should be a file called LS_HSI.EXE that you can download from somewhere like HP.com.

Do at your own risk!

Why go through all that?:
Because v1.02 won't allow you to flash unless you got the LG 4166B burner. The Firmware loader in v1.0 doesn't do the check and it's cooler to use it with the newer FW (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) .

Other notes:
I have heard that this works for external burners as well but double check that you use the right firmware.
One thing you should note is that your PC will now recognize your burner as GSA-4166B, not HP.

Haven't tried this but:
To revert back to HP firmware, download the correct one from HP.com and extract the .bin file and use it with the LG v1.0 FW loader. Future FW updates should then be used with HP.

If someone uses this guide, can you post the results of burning a backup from a X360 game? I can't try this yet as my TV blew out on me and I have yet to flash my X360's DVD FW(Don't have a SATA card yet).

Nice find.  As for the booktype, it isn't 100% essential on all drives/burners HOWEVER, a person would be a fool at this stage not to do so.  It has clearly proven to help out greatly with compatibility.

So some people are lucky with having their X360 read DVD+R booktype? I'm a noob when it comes to the X360. I'm gonna try flashing my X360 FW today once I read the new v41 tutorial.

It seems that the downloads are down. Download them here before this download expires:

Also note: The latest xtreme v3.1 FW for the TS-H943 drives doesn't require you to set the booktype anymore. So you might not have to flash the firmware on your HP DVD burner if you have the TS-H943 drive in your Xbox 360

I don't think so. What you can do is google the words: HP 460V Firmware and research. That's what I did and found the OEM manufacturer of the burner and flashed with their firmware(after finding out that it was capable of changing booktype....**Read note on bottom). I was lucky because their first OEM flashing program doesn't check for up to date firmware or brand name(or else I wouldn't be able to crossflash or restore to my old firmware).

**If you plan on using backups on a 360 TS-H493 DVD drive, you won't have to change the booktype. Thus, you won't have to flash the firmware of your DVD burner.

I have a HP DVD Writer 635d which I updated its Firmware from JPS3 to JPS5 (I dunno if any newer ones are available), but in both cases DVDInfo says "It seems your writer do not support Bitsetting). Once I tried burning a PGR3 and Call of Duty 2 but after a long delay the tray (HP DVD+R DL) was ejected (at 35% of progress in CloneCD) and said BURN FAILED... Luckily NOTHING was written on the disc. It means the DVD was still Blank.

Does HP DVD Writer 635d or Sony DRU 700A writers have the capability to burn XBOX 360 backup images?

PS: I burned four HP DVD+R Double Layer 2.4x with SONY DRU-700A and unfortunately NONE of 'em worked in   my Toshiba-SAMSUNG XBOX 360 Drive. I wasted 26 US Dollars for these DVDs : (((

Well since you have the TS DVD drive in the 360 then you're okay without setting the booktype(No need to flash the burner's firmware to allow it) if you are using the newer xtreme firmwares for the 360. Verbatim DVD+R DL has the highest success rate so use those if you can.

With my HP 740i/b burner, DVDInfo wouldn't set the booktype so I used Nero CD-DVD Speed to set it. Then used DVDInfo and all the other programs mentioned in the tutorials.

I'm not sure why your burns fail with Clone CD. Best to ask on a seperate thread.

No no no. This is just a guide I made for flashing an HP 740i/b DVD burner for it to allow setting the booktype to DVD-ROM. The older Xtreme firmwares for the Xbox 360 TS-H943 drives required that 360 games be burned as DVD-ROM(not DVD+R) booktype.

So with the newer Xtreme firmwares released, it doesn't require you to set the booktype as DVD-ROM. So this guide has been quickly outdated to an extent. I'm not sure if the new Hitachi FW's require you to set your booktype to DVD-ROM so this guide may still be relevant.
