Pioneer 111d And Db 1.23 Firmware
« on: August 14, 2006, 08:47:00 PM »

I have heard a lot of folks telling everyone they need to upgrade their Pioneer 111D firmware to Dangerous Brothers 1.23 Firmware.

This is not factual at all. I have been able to burn all 9 of my original X360 games using the Pioneer 111D burner with the OEM 1.09 Firmware version.

props on the hitatchi backup guide too.

should put a link to the guide in your sig so more people see it.

Congratulations.  I hearby dub thee noobtard.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)   Of course it is POSSIBLE to burn working backups without setting the booktype to DVD-ROM, then again it is also possible for people to burn working backups (for other applications) to Princo DVD-R, does that mean they are good media?  NO!!!!!!!  Just because you have success doesn't make the above statement false.  The bottom line is that in order to ensure the greatest amount of success for all users it is wise to upgrade to the Dangerous Brothers booktype setting firmware.  It has long been established that to ensure the best compatibility on +R discs (single layer or double layer) that you set the booktype to DVD-ROM.  Setting the booktype to DVD-ROM allows the +R discs to be read like a factory pressed disc.  Even though you might have the exact same model of drive as someone else on the forum (360 DVD-ROM and the 111D and firmware revision), someone else could attempt the same method but with little or no success.  Sorry to rant on this but it bugs the crap out of me when people ASSume that just because they got a few backups working without following the most recommended method that the most recommended method is false.  You would be amazed at how many more people would NOT have working backups if they followed your advice on this particular issue.

Jester, are you saying that some pioneer 111d burners won't set the booktype to DVD-ROM out of the box? I thought it was a long standing fact that their main feature since the 108 model was autobitsetting? I've had a 108 and a 111d and they both burn discs as DVD-ROM by default without any firmware upgrade.

That was my understanding.  Which firmware revision do you have on your 111D though?  As for setting the booktype to DVD-ROM the first one that I know did that for sure was the 109 HOWEVER Pioneer didn't introduce that until the V1.40 firmware on the 109.  The 110 if memory serves me correctly also needed a later version to do it.  Either way I will be able to confirm this for sure within a week or so, as I have a 111D on the way.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)  It could also be a variation between different models.  For example the OEM 111D versus the 111L.  Have you confirmed for sure that the booktype is set to DVD-ROM (ie used DVD Decrypter or DVD Info pro to check the disc after it was burned).

Jesterace:

I think your the noobtard, now your back peddeling, by saying thats my understanding.

I specifically mentioned the Pioneer 111D. No other burner. You don't even have a 111D to make comments but you still try to flambast me? Please.

The firmware on my 111D is 1.09.

But does the firmware revision that you are using set the booktype to DVD-ROM on D/L discs?

All I can say is that I have had 3 successful burns with 111D + DB 1.23 FW, one on an HP DVD+R DL and two on Verbatim DVD+R DLs.  No coasters.  So this is definitely the best combo.  No one ever claimed you HAD to have DB 1.23.

I bought a pioneer 111d a month ago. I checked the firmware when I got it and it's version 1.19. I've left it as it is. I've burned over 20 Verbatim DL and I can confirm they are all DVD-ROM booktype without any fiddling about.

This is how it is and that's how the stock firmware behaves, that's why I bought the burner in the first place. My 108 is the same. Furthermore, all pioneer burners since the 108 have all provided autobitsetting for DL discs. BUT, will not autobitset for DVD+R single layer discs. That's where all the confusion comes from.

Third party firmwares have been required to bitset single layer DVD+R discs (for use in most dvd players/xbox etc). DVD-R single or dual layer doesn't require/support bitsetting at all.

Hi Guys,

Just to clarify:

If using DVD+R or +RW media, the booktype will NOT automatically be set as DVD-ROM.
However, if using DVD+R DL (Double Layer) media, the booktype will "automatically" be set as DVD-ROM.

this applies to the 108 upwards to 111D.

so, you don't need the db firmware if you have a one of the above pioneer buners!

For what it's worth I got a 111D yesterday, used Verbatim DL disc's, stock firmware and so far everything I've burned on it using CloneCD has worked a treat - not a single coaster, 9 successful so far.

Using the 7in1 firmware on the 360 Hitachi Drive.
