As for media, there is a world of difference between the D/L medias. Verbatim is made by Mitsubishi Chemicals and has been around the longest of any of the D/L medias and has been proven through compatibility and longevity tests to be the most versatile for all applications (through error rate scans, tests over the years, ect.). Not to mention the fact that Verbatim is used to bench test most of the DVD Burners out there so you know when you buy Verbatim that your burner's write strategies have probably been optimized for that media. You get no such gaurantees with any of the other media that is out there. There are so many burner/firmware variables with the other discs that it isn't even funny. Memorex, Fujifilm, Traxdata, Ritek, Ritdata and several other D/L medias are all Ritek D01. This has been around for just a little less time than Verbatim but the results and quality control have been so mixed on these that it's hit and miss. Some so far have had great luck on them although the scans on these discs (both early and later on) are not promising and Ritek's media as of late is well known for having entire batches becoming unreadable after less than a year. This isn't to say it is universal, like the media the results are a gamble. Phillips and HP are among the brands that use CMC Mag D/L media. Like Ritek the results on these are mixed and the scans thus far ARE NOT promising for longevity. There are a number of other medias made in China that have stolen the Ricoh D/L media ID code (fakes) among these brands are Matrix and GQ. The problem here is that burners detect the media ID code and optimize the write strategies to the faked media ID code instead of what the media really is. So there lies the problem. This can cause issues right up front, down the road, ect. As for the burner, all that shows is your ignorance. The Pioneer 111D not the "Pioneer Gold Platinum 1482x65 triple laser burner." is often recommended around here simply because it is a troubleshooter in the equation. Do you absolutely HAVE TO HAVE a Pioneer 111D to get working burns, HELL NO!!!!!!!!!! Does it make things alot easier for those who are struggling? HELL YES!!!!!!!!! The Pioneer 111D is one of the few burners that by nature gets along with the Hitachi drive. I recognize that the latest media check firmware can fix media compatibilities with discs that are burned on other burners but this still isn't 100%. The other thing that is really nice about the 111D is that it automatically sets the booktype to DVD-ROM on D/L DVD+R discs right out of the box. So no screwing around with booktype adjustments for everything to be burned properly in this department. That and it's not like this sucker costs a fortune so I can understand why so many people recommend this burner to people who are trying everything and still can't get their backups working. This "Pioneer Platinum Tripple Laser Burner" (known to the educated as the Pioneer 111D) can usually be had for $35 shipped or less on a regular basis here in the US, and is comparably priced in most other countries. A small price to pay IMHO to troubleshoot cause let's face it even cheap quality D/L media coasters get expensive if you go through a whole pack that doesn't work. Sorry to rant but I get so sick of the fact that people do extensive research on things like media (been doing it for almost 4 years) and offer detailed scans, compatibility and longevity studies and some noob always has to come on here and say, well brand X worked for me, so you guys are all full of BS. There are many parts to the equation to getting a true picture on the media issue. A working discs for a few folks is hardly the sum of quality media. As for the burner, like the media, the research is definitely here to support a number of issues being solved by people switching to the Pioneer 111D, so I guess the people who had their problems fixed by going with the Pioneer 111D are all full of shite, right? Don't be making blanket statements like these unless you have researched your facts first. Personal experiences mean nothing without confirming the statements with other users experiences.
no apology needed.. im glad u know the research.. i guess i should have said the following first because i was basing an assumption that most ppl have a decent burner and decent media (credit to you) ...all im saying is if ur dvd drive burns dvd dl and isnt some no name out the flea market cheapest drive in the world pos.. and ur dvd dl media isnt some no name out the flea market cheapest disc in the world pos then knowing this.. Since many ppl are posting successful results with a wide range of media and burners obviously
to increase ur chances of a successful backup boot one shouldnt be so focused on just the media and drive. If we agree on that, then u may see why i said what i said and recommended doing rubberband mod because all posts seem to show 100% success rate (including me) with this particular situation. thx again
