The Pioneers ARE NOT reliable scanners.  The 3 drives that have proven to be the most reliable for scanning are as follows:  Lite-On, Benq, Plextor.  NEC are kinda iffy drives for scans, certainly better to be scanning with than the Pioneer though.  I am working on getting a Benq 1650 for this very reason.  @the guy who says that Ritek isn't crap, as a whole it is.  You are correct that though that the particular Ritek scanned quite well.  Keep an eye on it though.  Ritek is famous for starting out decent and then deteriorating rapidly.  Try rescanning it in about 6-7 months and see if you don't notice a difference.

Actually I believe the 510a is a bona-fide Sony.  It wasn't until the 520 or the 530 that they started outsourcing to Lite-On.  Either way, you can use DVD info Pro to tell for sure.  Just have it give you the detailed info on the drive.  If it turns out that it is a Lite-On, then make sure you do the scan at 4x.  Lite-Ons are great scanners but if you do the scan above 4x (5x on Late model drives) then the readings can be way off.  The one really cool thing about the Lite-Ons is that they support Kprobe which IMHO is the nicest burn scan program out there.  Don't get me wrong, the test with Nero isn't bad but the layout of Kprobe is so much more detailed and easy to read.  Honestly it has been tough to decide which drive to go with (Late model Lite-On or Benq) to have for scanning purposes.  I have pretty much decided on the Benq since the late model Lite-Ons don't have rip lock removal so they are slow as molasses for ripping discs, couple that with the fact that the Benq can support reliable scans at 8x and the fact of course that it isn't a Lite-On (I've had rotten luck with Lite-On drives).  One thing to consider though is that the Benq doesn't seem to get along well with discs burned on other drives (ie Lite-On, Plextor, LG).  The good news though is that it seems to get along fine with discs burned on the Pioneer 111D.  Trust me, I got a bunch of info on both of the drives from the folks over at cdfreaks on this before I made my decision.  If anyone is considering getting a drive for scanning, they might want to take a look at the following thread in order to help them make their decision.  Given the price of DVD Burners these days it is worth it to have a dedicated ripper/scanner and then a dedicated burner.  My 111D will be doing all of my burning for sure as it seems to be the most flexible with the media that I use (-R for single layer).  In strict terms of burning the 111D just seems to be more well balanced for all formats.

Okay here is a scan of an MKM001 Verbatim D/L DVD+R burned at 8x on my Pioneer 111D with stock V1.23 firmware.  Take it for what it's worth but it is one of the best scans that I have seen on D/L media, just scroll down to the last post in the thread:

Yeah, I wasn't fond of some of the others in there.  I like both Kprobe and Nero CD/DVD Speed.  One of the benefits of having a Lite-On burner is that you can choose either or.

Will do.  BTW, I burned this with my Pioneer 111D @ 8x with the stock V1.23.  Not bad considering the discs are officially rated at 2.4x. wink.gif  Who was the poor soul who was getting all of those shite scans with Ritek D01 and the NEC drive?  Even if they work I wouldn't trust them to last long with those scores.

For DVDs anyways they are certainly the most versatile for the money.

Okay out of sheer morbid curiosity I went ahead and burned the following @6x just to see how it compares with my 8x burn listed above.  It is better but I don't know that there is an earthshattering difference.  Anyways:

Pioneer 111D with stock V1.23 firmware, 7945MB
2.4x Verbatim (MKM001) burned at 6x using DVD Decrypter (V3.5.4)
