I've had this sort of weird behaviour and eventually narrowed the reason for it down to one thing.....media. I've had several brands that give 100% working backups, partially working backups and dud backups all on the same media and same game image! Some DL seem to be good/bad and inbetween quality all in the same spindle. Since I changed to Verbatim they've all worked 100% even burned at 4x.
