My 360 Suddenly Hates Verbs
« on: July 05, 2006, 04:01:00 PM »

I backed up several of my games to verbatims and my 360 (Pal UK Samsung Drive) loved them all.   My 360 also liked the DataSAFE Riteks too.  Just bought some more Verbs and now every single one I burn now either gives the OPEN TRAY error or loads maybe once or twice then gives the error next time I try and play.

I've exhausted every possiblity I can think of and wasted 15x verbs in the process (even had two tubs exchanged by the supplier).  I have two setups, one with a new pioneer 111D (orig fw 1.19) and my laptop with an NEC 6650 (this by the way had a 100% perfect record with burning my 360 backups).   Both setups use the latest CloneCD and both continue to burn backups to DataSAFE riteks without a problem.

Wierdly I tried some of the backups that didn't work on the Verbs on DataSAFE's and they boot perfectly, and my older verbatim burnt discs continue to work 100% without a single problem.

I'm now on my 3rd tub of Verbatims (2x were replaced FOC) and still have the OPEN TRAY error - I'm finding it hard to think of any other explanation other than blaming the highly praised Verbatim discs.

Anyone else had anything similar occur ?

look on the bottom of the DVD DL disk after writing, from the inside is there a ring circle, not from the 360 scraching, but from the writing, if so, then it was a bad burn, but sometimes theres a change it isnt, when you put it in, listen to your xbox 360, and if it makes a noice, kinda hit the top of it, and the noise should go away and it will boot the DVD. I have to do that, im not sure why, but it helps and it reads the disk. And just kinda pund the top, above the dvd drive, not death hitting, just enough to give it a hit into line.

PS: im not kidding, and no it wont hurt your xbox 360, i do it all the time, just how i do it, if you think its risky, then hope you can get it working another way.  pop.gif

Hi jimjom, thanks for the idea but I'm using an NTFS drive so in theory it doesn't need defragging (so I believe) - Even if it was a frag problem it would effect the Ritek burns aswell tho and they're working perfectly.

Hi jtom617,

The ring doesn't seem to be there and the burn seems fine, as I mentioned Riteks are burning the same backups perfectly with the same setups (trying 2x) and it just seems to be the verbatims I'm having problems with.  When it's gonna fail to load it does do two noises as tho the disc is slipping or similar yeh - gonna try and avoid giving it a whack for now tho lol but it's very temtping - thx for the input smile.gif

Well this just gets weirder lol.  I bought another tub of Verbs from an alternative supplier and they give the open tray error aswell so I sent my backups to a friend to try (Samsung Drive) and they all boot np's - even sent him a blank for him to burn a backup he'd made of one of his games and that worked too.

So it seems my Samsung drive just suddenly stopped liking Verbatims as Traxdata and DataSAFE's continue to work 100% - as do the verbs I'd previously made from the original batch I had.

Could be but I backed up mine to Verbatim when my 360 still liked them so impossible to confirm for sure unless you re-burn I guess.

since my first backup i used hp dvd+r but i notice the sound that a normal xbox360 disc goes away when playing backups, so do you think that when its reading these other types of discs it might ruin the laser
as ms uses a certain brand or proprietary discs you know what i mean for those reading fine then damn nothing

Have u tried the HD TRICK: Insert game flick hd switch up and then back to normal (hdtv to normal) or (normal to hdtv) or insert the game then shut down the 360 using the big X in the controller then turn 360 on?

Good lUck Also put game in then take off hdd (hard drive) then put back on!

Its also possible u got the wrong ss.bin or burner is mest up? But im guessin u jus need to try all 3 tricks i posted above and they will 100% work if not then its ur burner or maybe some file or something

@ mayto - Hi thanks for the idea but I'd already checked the dye and they're identical MKM 001 manufactured by Mitsubishi.  I've also tried two different suppliers for teh verbs, again they have the MKM 001 dye.

@ Chintz - Again thanks for the ideas but I've tried every trick mentioned in the forums here and elsewhere but they make no difference.  Also there's no possibility of there being the wrong ss bin / file etc cos I've tested them using exactly the same images made from exactly the same originals that work perfectly when I've backed them up to DataSAFE's and traxDATA's discs.

As mentioned I've discovered my 360 likes the branded Ritek D01's so I'm ok in that respect it's just I wondered if anyone else had experienced their box suddenly stopping liking the verbatims, seems it's just me lol

For those of you that has open tray problem. Maybe can try to use different media. i simply change to memorex
from verb. works fine on first burn. i m going to reburn all the open tray disc. let you guys later.

My xbox 360 is doing the exact same thing, it will play verbatims once or twice and then give the open tray error, did anyone figure out why this is happening or how to fix it?
