I guess I'd have to say it must have something to do with buffering through USB...maybe it doesnt like it too much.

probably not a cypress chipset external case. some chipsets str8 up suck. I'm gonna assume you are supplying a usb 2.0 connection here.

I'm not sure what kind of case you have but I have THIS one going through firewire and I can burn a 7 gig iso on DL disks at 6X (16 m:45 s average) You might want to try a different case or try firewire. I know usb 2.0 is a little faster than firewire but I ended up burning more coasters  with it on the usb connection than the flawless burns I get on firewire.

I'm getting the same thing but I have it internally.  My NEC 3520 works great but when switch to the 111D I get burn error.  I tried making a plain old single layer dvd movie and still the same error.  I return the drive and the next one have the same problem.  I'm going to try to update my ASPI to see if it will help.  I post more stuff

here

try a usb to sata adapter, works like a charm even on notebooks.

i would not recommend anyone to use a usb connection for a cd/dvd writer. there are many weird issues that are hard to fix with this type of external cases. i suggest you try firewire instead, it work extremely well.
