I got the same problem, have quite a few shiny £4 coasters now....i was using pioneer drives that are supposedly auto bitset to dvd rom, so just to be sure i bought an NEC 3550A which i see people on here reccomend, i am using reccommended verbatims..........i got a feeling its something to do with random ss on UK games ?? I am going to try the dvd decryptor method now..........

are you getting just unrecognized disc in the green area or are you getting the soft cloth/unrecognized disc/wrong region maybe on the silver right pop-out?

Don't confuse the two. One is telling you something very specific (like wrong region code) one it str8 up can't read the disc or bad rip.

there are two distinct unrecognized disc and one of those goes VERY fast(when it catches hd/av trick) and one takes 30-60 seconds to receive..

@ereet1

It says Unrecognized Disc, please clean disc with a soft cloth and/or reset the console. It takes a while to come up, like the game is going to load, black screen for about 30 seconds with the disc spinning, then the error pops up on the silver right tab. Doesn't say anything about wrong region or anything like that, and it shouldn't since all the games I backuped work on the originals (NTSC/U).

Anyone think upgrading the firmware on my burner will do the trick? I've seen that there is a v1.0b firmware, mine only has v1.0a, not sure what exactly is different between the two though.

Edit.

Hmm. just checked out the new v1.0b firmware, and it does say "Improvements: Writing performance and reliability improvements.", maybe this is the problem, anyone else have the Sony DRU-820A drive that would care to comment on this?

so we have 3 different unrecognized disc errors:

green where you normally have "play disc" -> totally messed up burn
Silver tab with Wrong Region Code -> Mismatched SS or FORGOT SS.BIN

Silver tab without region code -> Probably just a bad burn.

Interesting. I will make sure i GETSS'd again and make some more coasters smile.gif

j/w, but what does it say when you're using the original stock firmware and try to run a backup?

Nope, updated firmware (v1.0b) didn't work.

Still get the exact same error message:

Unrecognized Disc
This disc is unreadable.

1. Clead the disc with a soft cloth
2. Restart the console.

This is frustrating, 5 discs down, 15 to go, at least i have some shiny coasters now...

I have had both of those messages, i have only one game for my console and that is far cry, this is the only game i need to back up at the moment....i have tried 3 different burners and i have used 2 types of disc....i have checked, rechecked, and checked again the ss and used various methods of burning, i casnt use the dvd decryptor method as i have not successfully got a back up working yet....it looks like this isnt going to work for me and i will have to wait for the chip.

you people have to realize that xbox drives are picky.. some more than others.

go with the flow of whats working for people and you should be fine.

40 bucks for a pioneer 111d
60 bucks at sams club for 30 Berbatim DL discs -or-
27 bucks shipped from rima for 10 verb DL discs.

so just a question, when you use ss merger are the games and ss's coming up green?  If not i would really consider re ripping the game.  I had a couple that looked right, right size, right extracted size, 7.05 and everything but they just wern't coming up on ss merger.  Burned anyhow and made coasters.  After a few tries i got mad and started all over.  Re did iso and then ss merger recognized both burned and sweet it works.

So at this point if it doesn't come up green on ss merger (especially if its NTSC) then you probably did something wrong and should rerip the game and ss.

i always burn at 4X on the pioneer. anything more and you'll see where the drive is shifting up/down it makes the disc not look uniform.

4x on the verbatim MKM001 seems solid all the way across the board.

bah to 1x and 2.4x thats like waiting forever to test your coaster er backup

when i do my backs up they sure do come up green...
does it matter what you choose in the "game name" part

other than that the only error i get is from the box saying unrecognized disc clean with soft cloth so as we speak i'm attempting the 6x burn on a verbatim disc with my memorex dl burner (the actual speed while physically burning the disc fluctuates tho so it still may not work)....did this during my lunch break will check it when i get home....
