Ok easy test for some that has a spare dvd+r dl and does not... repeat does not have a pioneer drive. Burn a movie onto it use bit setting. If the bastard boots then its the firmware. I have a feeling com was rushed to get this out. He also stated he couldn't test it himself... other people may have. So find a dvd9 movie do an exact copy and give it a shot. Process of elimination.

DVD+DL brand or ID: Verbatim 2.4x certified
DVD recorder: LG GSA-4166B
DVD recorder firmware: ?
Recorded speed and soft:  2.4x Clonecd 5.2.9.1
Working: NO (Dirty Disc, tried about 10 times with  backup that work on Sammy drives)

DVD+DL brand or ID: TDK DVD+R DL
DVD recorder: LG GSA-4166B
DVD recorder firmware: ?
Recorded speed and soft: 2.4x Clonecd 5.2.9.1
Working: NO  (Dirty Disc, tried about 15 times with two backups that work on Sammy drives)

It sounds like the drive is having trouble reading a certain sector of the disc, possibly the SS

It seems to me like it's primarily the NEC burners which causes the problems...?

Oh, by the way... can someone RIP A TITLE FROM THE TOSHIBA ITSELF (security sector too)?
I think that would be 10 times more useful.
A comparison between Samsung and Toshiba SSes from the same title could be useful too.

I tried two burns, both successful.
My burner is a Pioneer 110D with firmware 1.22 crossflashed to automatically set booktype/bitsetting to DVDROM for DVD+DL media
Verbatim 2.4x (MFG: Mitsubishi MKM 001)
Memorex 2.4x (MFG: Ritek Co. RITEK D01)
used latest clonecd, no problems with playback.
my drive is a 47DJ
hope this helps

I backed up Full Metal Jacket (5.7GB) onto a 2.4x Verbatim DVD+R DL and it reads in my xbox everytime whether i put the disc in once the dashboard is loaded or upon boot. Havn't flashed my drive yet (still download Slax boot cd). My drive is a 47DH. So I don't think this is a media problem, sounds like a problem with SS sector being read by the drive...

DVD+R DL brand: Verbatim 8x
DVD recorder: Pioneer DVR-108XL flashed with PIODATA 118 firmware
Working: Yes

The PIODATA firmware makes the bitsetting automatically dvd-rom.
Burned one game at 2.4x and it works perfectly.  Boots both from bootup or inserting the game while the system is on.  Burning another game now.

I officially recommend EVERY NEC USER TO NOT (!!) BURN ANY FURTHER DL DISCS ON THESES BURNERS! AS THERE IS NOT A SINGLE CASE REPORTED WITH A SUCCESSFULLY RUNNING BACKUP! YOU WILL JUST CREATE LOTS OF COASTERS! SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!!

I went out and picked up a Pioneer DVR 111D (the box says DVR 710 if you're looking in a store for one) from Best Buy, after calling earlier in the day to see if they carry it, and the guy said "we don't have any Pioneers", well they had at least 10 of them. Long story short, I'm about 23 minutes away from either further confirming the drive's greatness, or being the exception to the rule...hope 2.4x works.

Hmm...K, maybe if this is true, then this might help us understand why the other burners aren't burning bootable discs. Something the Pioneer burners do, is not happening with the other burners.

My burner is an I/O Magic Burner (rebadged BTC burner) and I have the bitsetting tool. I have Verbatim DL discs I picked up today, but problem is I don't have any 360 games to rip, since I traded them in weeks ago >_< So I'll have to go rent a couple...  I'll definately let everyone know how it goes once I get all set up.

Alright, after switching to a Pioneer DVR111D, and using the same media, again at 2.4x, on the same computer, same Xbox 360, my first attempt did NOT work. I'm going to try burning at 1X, and with DVD Decrypter instead.
