QUOTE
Oh and finally the only reason I would need a mod chip would be so I could go back to the original bio's and play the real game so I can go on x-box live correct? What else?

The reason behind modding an xbox is to play your backed games, play movies, music emulators and more. You don't need a modchip to play original games and go on xbox live.

Yes you would use the mod chip to play your backups and you would need to turn it off to play your originals on Xbox Live.

I wouldnt get either of those drives...personally.

Outpost has some good deals, and your local consumer electronics giant, i.e. best buy, circuit city, comp usa, just to name a few have some really good deals they run on almost a weekly basis.  I just bought a 160 gig seagate from Outpost for 50 or 60 dollars after rebate.  My PC had an IBM Deskstar, which is hitachi and it didnt last long.  I would say Seagate, Maxtor and WD are your best bets, and you should be able to get something with 8MB cache without even trying.  If you are patient and keep an eye out you will find some killer deals.

Bad experience with the Hitachi/IBM, and the other ones I think are over priced for the technology.

This one looks decent... not sure if it is lockable though.. Outpost Maxtor

and this

You should read up a bit more before you get too far into your modding.

If you want to try and play on Xbox live after you have modded your system and replaced your hard drive, you need to "Lock" your hard drive.  Most are lockable, but some are not.  There are some links to databases that display by model number and maker and all that jazz.  If you dont care to play on Xbox live then dont worry about it.  In which case it is probably in your best interest not to lock it.

If you want to play xbox live it must be "lockable".  Check the forums for which are lockable and that will already narrow down your selection.

You know how big you want your hard drive... that narrows it down more.

Get a maxtor, seagate or western digital, they are all good, you will have some people who hate one brand and someone else who loves and swears by the same brand.  They are all good.

Get something with more recent technology... 8 mb cache and 7200 rpm.  Most new drives will have that.

Get something that is selling for $.50 or less per gig.

Dont get a refurbed hard drive, dont get a hard drive that looks cheap if you cant verify who made it.

Just some guidlines.  This isnt brain surgery.  Dont hurt yourself.

Good luck

Yes it was a great deal.  I put it in my PC though.  I have decided that I am going to rip my cd collection to MP3, both for streaming to xbmc and my car stereo plays MP3 CDs... so it is like having a multi disk changer!

I too am still waiting on the rebate.

I know this question has probably been asked a million times.  If you are really looking for what people think, search the forums, and you can see how other people have responded in the past.

You need to decide what you want to use your hdd for.  40 gig would not have been nearly enough for me, but it may suit you.
