10 Xbox 360 tricks Microsoft won’t tell you

1. Connect your Xbox 360 to two screens at once

If you’ve got one of the component/composite dual video cables – the one that comes in the box with most 360s – you can have your console display its gamey goodness on two TVs simultaneously. The trick is to flick the cable’s switch to Standard Definition but hook up the composite (yellow) cable to one screen and the component (the red, green, blue) cables to another. It won’t be high-def, but it could be handy if you’re staging a mini LAN party and want to set up a display for bored spectators to point their eyes at.

you cannot use the component/composite cable and the HDMI out at the same time unless you do one of the following:

 1. Take the grey housing off of the component cable base so that both it and the HDMI cable can fit;
 2. Find a 3rd party cable that will fit at the same time as the HDMI cable. I know that people have used a 3rd party VGA cable that has a smaller base and can fit along with the HDMI cable; OR
 3. Buy the Microsoft dongle that allows you to use digital audio out and HDMI at the same time (costs about $50).

 I also run an HDMI cable from my Xbox to my TV, and I then run a digital audio out from my TV to my Receiver. For some reason, I only get a stereo signal -- not dolby digital -- from my Receiver. I have quadruple checked every setting on my TV, my Xbox, and my receiver; it just doesn't work. I do, however, get digital audio from my cable box to my TV to my receiver (the exact same set-up), but I do not get it when the source is the Xbox.

 I did research on this topic for a couple weeks. Most people do not get a digital signal when running an HDMI cable from Xbox to TV and then digital audio out from TV to Receiver. A vast majority of TVs will only send digital audio out when the audio source is the TV's own tuner (i.e., most do not do digital audio pass through to the digital audio out). Some do, however. Nobody is sure why mine does with my cable box but not my Xbox, though...which really confuses me as well.

 I would suggest using one of the 3 above mentioned ways to run HDMI to your TV and digital audio from the Xbox to your receiver.

It sounds like that's only a solution for people who need optical out and HDMI...

It is. It's not possible to use HDMI and any other video output at the same time.

I would've just hooked up the 360 to the reciever via HDMI and then from the reciever to the TV with HDMI.
I guess you would present yourself with a new problem then. You'd have to have the reciever on for it to pass the 360 signal on to the TV so surround would be on 24/7.

I actually have mine set up this way but if I set my reciever to send the audio to the AMP and TV then my reciever drops to dolby digital 2.0 even though it is 5.1 if I set the reciever to only send the audio to the AMP.

Anyway, quick question. I play Rock Band 2 alot. My lag timings always change seemingly everytime I turn the 360 on. Since I have an Elite, would I be better off "lag wise" by doing the optical to reciever and HDMI straight to TV?

Mehtevas can you set the delay on the receiver for the 360 input? The delay setup in Rockband works for me, but it may work through the receiver for you.

I'm not 100% sure if this will work with hdmi because i know it hasn't worked for me in the past using component... but try plugging some RCA cables into the video and audio outputs on the back of your TV.  You have hdmi you'll probably have these.  This is what i used to do when I recorded my games. Good luck!
