hmm...after playing around some more, I noticed that xbox live videos have no sound either.  There was something about the superbowl emulated on Madden or something and when I played it there was no sound.  I left it alone for few hours, came back, tried again and now it's working.  Finished watching another .mp4 file, went back to the main screen, checked something, went back to the hdd to play another mp4 and again, same problem, no sound.

this is getting really weird.

is there a way to maybe hard reset the xbox?  maybe force it to refresh EVERYTHING, as if it were a new system?
