My 360 No Longer Working On My Samsung Lcd
« on: April 16, 2008, 11:44:00 AM »

Hello there, first post from me, and yes im in need of assitance.

I recently turned on my 360 at home to find that disaster has occured.

I run my 360 through an LCD samsung LE40R74. The vga (blue, green and red) slots in the back of the tv in the "component" slot, and the audio goes into my samsung home cinema. The 360 then plays its games through the component channel on the screen.

So imagine my absolute shock when i turn it all on and i get "MODE NOT SUPPORTED" error message on the screen.

I have been running this setup for about 18 months without a problem, i go to Dublin for the weekend, have to much Guinness, look forward to getting home and slouching out in  front of PRO EVO and it wont work.

Following the instructions listed elsewhere on the forum, i decided to try using my brothers 360 to try and highlight where the problem is.

So first off, i left my vga cable and my power cable in place and just replaced my 360 with my brothers. my brothers 360 worked perfectly fine. No error messages on the screen, it worked perfectly. This shows that its my xbox thats the problem.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Thank you

Hi - welcome to the 'scene. Always good to see another 'Hammer' in the forums!

From what you're saying, it looks as if someone has set the console to 1920 x 1080 by mistake - a mode not supported by your TV.

I found this for you:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911059

After following the guide, see if it works afterwards by setting it back to 1360 x 768.

I had a load of trouble getting my 360 to work on my Samsung via VGA.  In the end had to hook the console up to a monitor that supported more resolutions, and then configure my 360 to run at the TVs native resolution.

Did you acutally see your Xbox restart as per the guide I linked to you? If this is the case, your console should have reverted to 640 x 480. As already suggested, you can always connect it to another monitor and see if you can change it on there.

I've got my X360 connected to my Samsung LCD and it shouldn't be a problem. Check the switch on the back of the X360's video cable in case you've set it to the wrong setting.

Also, instead of using the component cables test using the RGBs. Does that work? Are you sure the rights coloured cables are in the right sockets on the back of the TV? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Do you get audio?

I've tried the steps outlined by MS and this is what I did:

1. Switch on your 360 via the guide button on your wireless controller. It has to be player 1 (top-left).
2. As soon as the top left quadrant lights up on your controller, press and hold Y and Right Trigger (not right bumper!). After 10 seconds, the console should switch itself off and turn itself on again. Your display settings should be reset.

Let me know if this works.

managed to get it to turn off using y and right trigger. turns off, turns on  again, remains on just power light on, no change in settings.

... to the "im sending my xbox back to microsoft" topic

I know it's a moot point, but looking back this is what confused me. The Blue, Red and Green phono sockets are Component not VGA - the VGA is the D-Sub socket on the back of your TV.

Do you get an image by switching the cable from HDTV to TV? It's on the Xbox AV plug.

By what you're saying, it sounds like the console itself has the problem. No doubt MS will talk you through 10 pages of troubleshooting....

On to more serious matters, lets hope we can get all 3 points against Derby tomorrow! I'll be sick if the Yids finish above us (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Ditto mate, definately need some improvement, however we are only ever going to be mid table fodder with curbishley in charge.

yeah sorry for the confusion, you are right.

next question anyone, do MS actually send you a box for your return? or should i just bypass them?

If it's under warranty by MS, let them do the legwork. From experience, they'll expect you to provide a box to send it in. The good news is that they'll collect it from you and drop it off. The last time I had a 360 picked up from MS they also sent a box, but I feel this is the exception rather than the rule in the UK. You can always ask they send you a box to pack it in.
