Black Screen Of Death (with Sound) Fix?
« on: April 12, 2008, 02:30:00 AM »

Ok, so I picked up an xbox on ebay that was having artifacting issues after a few minutes of gameplay - other than the artifacts the system worked fine, yada yada.  Anyways, I decide to tear it apart slap in some Arctic Silver 5 I have laying around (keep in mind I DID NOT replace the x-clamps, I will try that next).  Anyways, I go about the task, put it all back together, plug it in and BOOM - no picture on screen - crap.  However, I noticed that if I put slight pressure on the top of the GPU heatsink (and the GPU) that my TV acts like its trying to resolve a signal - wierd... bad connection maybe? So I unplug the fan in the back and decide to let the processor and GPU "bake" a little bit in hopes of getting somesort of result - so I let it overheat for about a minute, turn it off, plug the fan back in and reinstall the wind tunnel and power it back on - BOOM - picture is back. So, I turn it off and on again... picture still there... another attempt, still works.  So I pop in a Fight Night, sit down to play a round, play for a few minutes and the artifacting returns, so I turn off the unit.  Turn it back on and once again, no video.  By this time I had completely re-assembled the unit, so being the lazy bastard that I am, I wrap it in a towel in an attempt to "re-heat" (if you will) the unit.  Never gets to the overheat lights, but it does sound like a 747 getting ready for take off.  So I turn it off, ready to head for bed... but I decide to turn it back on one last time - BOOM, video is back... weird.

So I'm going to replace the x-clamps at some point and see where that gets me - I may hit the bottom of the GPU with a heat gun as well, as it could possibly be bad circuitry from the stress of the clamps.  I'm not completely sure if this would cause artifacting and the psychadelic colors - that usually comes only with a GPU that is TOO hot or is getting too much power.  But hey, I specifically bought the box with the intent of figuring out a thing or two about this no video BS, so here's hoping.  I'm crossing my fingers, but I'm not holding my breath.  If anyone else wants to attempt this, feel free to post your results, as I'm not sure when I'll get around to replacing the x-clamps...

Good luck!

The no video problem and 0102/E74 are basically the same issue, just a different area of the GPU connection. The towel trick was one of the worst things you could have ever done. There's no need to make every component inside the system overheat. Read the general hardware forums, lots of people (including myself) have fixed this problem.

I realize the towel trick overheats EVERYTHING - I never really thought I'd actually be able to fix this box, so I wasn't really concerned.  As I stated, it NEVER actually got to the point of overheating, so shouldn't be too bad.

You stated you fixed an 0102 error and a E74... this box does neither, it does not flash 3RoD nor does it display E74 on screen... it simply has a black screen after apparently having luminance issues and graphics artifacting.

I did indeed do a search of the forums, but seeing as how well the XScene search function works half the time, I may have very well indeed missed it.

So to fix a NO VIDEO problem, did you simply do the xclamp replacement or how did you go about it? I was unaware that people actually fixed the no video thing...

Thanks!

Boy, do I feel sheepish - I swear I scanned through 6+ pages of posts in this forum last night to no avail and then I find the info I'm looking for on the second page... blast!  This is what I get for staying up so late, messing with the friggin thing... oh well.

Anyways, am going to try using the heat gun today along with doing a proper xclamp replacement.  Hopefully this will fix the no video problem and I can ressurect the box... if not, oh well, lesson learned.

Thanks again for the input.

Success smile.gif  X-clamps replaced, heat gun to the GPU and ANA chips and its rocking like a champ - played 10 rounds of Fight Night on it without a hiccup...

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

No problem...though I really didn't do too much. Glad to see you got it working.
