Ok, so I picked up an xbox on ebay that was having artifacting issues after a few minutes of gameplay - other than the artifacts the system worked fine, yada yada. Anyways, I decide to tear it apart slap in some Arctic Silver 5 I have laying around (keep in mind I DID NOT replace the x-clamps, I will try that next). Anyways, I go about the task, put it all back together, plug it in and BOOM - no picture on screen - crap. However, I noticed that if I put slight pressure on the top of the GPU heatsink (and the GPU) that my TV acts like its trying to resolve a signal - wierd... bad connection maybe? So I unplug the fan in the back and decide to let the processor and GPU "bake" a little bit in hopes of getting somesort of result - so I let it overheat for about a minute, turn it off, plug the fan back in and reinstall the wind tunnel and power it back on - BOOM - picture is back. So, I turn it off and on again... picture still there... another attempt, still works. So I pop in a Fight Night, sit down to play a round, play for a few minutes and the artifacting returns, so I turn off the unit. Turn it back on and once again, no video. By this time I had completely re-assembled the unit, so being the lazy bastard that I am, I wrap it in a towel in an attempt to "re-heat" (if you will) the unit. Never gets to the overheat lights, but it does sound like a 747 getting ready for take off. So I turn it off, ready to head for bed... but I decide to turn it back on one last time - BOOM, video is back... weird.
So I'm going to replace the x-clamps at some point and see where that gets me - I may hit the bottom of the GPU with a heat gun as well, as it could possibly be bad circuitry from the stress of the clamps. I'm not completely sure if this would cause artifacting and the psychadelic colors - that usually comes only with a GPU that is TOO hot or is getting too much power. But hey, I specifically bought the box with the intent of figuring out a thing or two about this no video BS, so here's hoping. I'm crossing my fingers, but I'm not holding my breath. If anyone else wants to attempt this, feel free to post your results, as I'm not sure when I'll get around to replacing the x-clamps...
Good luck!
