Vga Cable - So Microsoft Or Any Brand?

HDMI is the best, and it doesn't matter which brand you buy, they're all the same. If you go with VGA, the M$ cable is $30, but it's a very good cable, and gives you all of the needed audio options. Cheap 3rd party VGA cables tend to be shitty.

HDMI is generally superior to VGA.  But not all HDMI cables are equal.  While it is digital like a TOSlink cable, that is where the similarities stop.  Things to look for in an HDMI cable:

1. v1.3 (the 360 HDMI output is only v1.2, but you might as well get the highest version for future proofing).

2. make sure it is category 1 or category 2 certified - cat 2 being the better of the 2

3. cable wire thickness of 22 or 24 AWG

If these specs are not listed, don't buy it.

As far as vga goes, only get the MS or Monster 360 vga cable.

A cable is a cable. The quality isn't the same among analog (component) video cables, but any cable should be able to output the same resolutions. How big of a picture are you using? Keep in mind 720p on anything above say 40" or so (from say about 7 feet away or less) will start to look crappy.

IMO, your best bet for a VGA cable will be to shop around your local game stores and ebay for a good used MS brand cable. It is possible to get good quality from 3rd party cables, but why risk it when the official cable can be had for ~$15.

Also when it comes to HDMI cables, 22-24 AWG is not needed until you get to longer lengths. 28 works just fine for standard lengths of 3-6'.

After some gaming, I've been watching another Heroes episode in HD via VGA from my laptop and saw way better and more rich blacks. That did it for me and I returned the Logic3 component cable and got Microsoft HD VGA cable. Setting the reference setting to Expanded,   big difference, now finally black was black. Before it was greyish.

(Mitsubishi 720p projector).

So from my experience and from this board:

IT IS better to pay once for Microsoft cable if you go component.
Any HDMI cable since its digital.

Thanks.
