Do you people bitset your DVD+Rs to DVD-ROM? I haven't tested this out myself but that's KEY to getting your DVD+Rs to read on your stand-alone dvd players and I'm sure it's the exact same thing with the Xbox drives.

Anyways, I have a Philips drive (not sure which version but I have an Xbox v1.6) and it's read everything I threw in it so far.

I have a samsung in a 1.1 and a phillips in my crystal (1.4, UK) xbox.

The phillips reads everything, CDR, CDRW, DVD +/- R & DVD +/- RW

Samsung reads CDR, some DVD+r, no dvd-r and some DVD-rw.

That said Phillips drivers from black xbox's don't seem to read cdr without some love.

I've seen a good 100+ drives and would say this was pretty accurate for most of the ones I've seen.

Never had a thompson read a cdr yet.

LUKEMAN UK..............OMG love your picture!!!!

I have a phillips drive and I don't know what version it is but I can't get it to read:

CDR
CDRW
DVD -r
DVD +r

Any suggestions?

Thanks

i would think your doing somethng wrong while making your disks or it just doesnt like the brand of disks your using, i havent had one memorex disk fail between 200 xbox games and 400 dvd movies, micro center has a sale on verbatim dvd 50 pack for 20$ i bought 200 and have 8 memorex left so ill be testing the verbatim in round 2 days

that 06 and 05 bit was just speculation, truthfully now all xboxs(new) that I have seen all come from the 05 China Factory, 06 was China 2 but i dunno what happened with that.

well as my memorey comes 2 be there is a Total of 8 Drives for the XBOX(6 Stock and 2 Modded)

for Samsung there is

605B-The Good 1 you all hear about
605F-The New 1 that reads Jack Shit, remember the Trays are Identicle so u need 2 open the machine 2 tell

then the 2 Modded Samsungs

616F-These Should Peform the same as the the 605B as it uses the Firmware from the 605B drives
616T-same as 616F

then the Phillips you got

2001
2003-Pot tweaked not 2 read DVD-R if I remember right
2004-Usually made in June/July, should read everything, model number is VAD6035/21

and of course the Thompson Drive, I also herd rumors of 2 versions to this Drive, but was never confirmed.

now down 2 opinion on drives, I myself have ran into 3 Drives

the 2003 Phillips, this 1 was real shitty, if u left a game disk in the drive when u shut it off, then when the machine was booted backup it would ALWAYS give a Dirty Disc Error(guessing just a bad drive), so I returned that system within 2 days after purchasing it. I then got me a Samsung 605B, works good, no DVD burner so I've never tried Burned DVDs yet, but it has read all Burned CD-R/RW I have thrown in it. now I have the new Phillips Drive(in hand and a Spare), havn't tried anything with it but originals, this came out of a CDN Crystal tho.

and from reading ability and reliablity, this is my opinion, some may agree/disagree

Phillips v3
Samsung 605B
Samsung 616F/T
Phillips v1
Phillips v2

Well I have a Samsung (B version) in a v1.1

It will read everything I throw at it but only if I do 2 reboots or start up evox and put an original disc in 1st.

Tried several times of good DVD-R, CD-RW and CD-R there is no difference.

Tried to Pot tweak it - no difference.

I recently modded a friend's X-Box a v1.0 with a Thomson drive, it read every DVD-R 1st time very quickly!

In my experience I rather have a Thomson drive rather than a Samsung!

Does anyone have an answer to this? I'm seriously thinking of buying a Thomson off Ebay!

Only Advantage of a Samsung is playing Video CDs

all five of my xboxs i have bought (xcept for the 6th halo special edition)
have all been referbs....
i have all three diferent drives...
and i have not had any problems on any of them reading DVD-rs or cd-rws...I would say each of my broken drives have lasted about a year or so...and that is with some serious gaming and ftping....
my little brother goes to school and comes home and plays....thats it...
school....xbox.....sleep.....school.....xbox...sleep.....
some where in that mixured he manages to eat and use the shitter...
but i can not say one drive is better then the other...
granted i just ordered 3 replacement drives cause i have 1 bad thompson, 1 bad philips and 1 bad samsung....so i went with the 616T....which i hear is the best..
and i think i got a good deal on it $84us each.....

I think it depends on if you get a "good" drive....you might get a new samsung that plays everything...or one that dosent play shit ....but i would prefer to lean more towards a phillips or a samsung

well, i voted for the samsung ver B. i have two of these drives and i also had a F version at one time. it reads everything i've thrown at it with the exception of + media. i don't really need it as i don't have a + media burner and not going through the trouble of having to buy + and - media. my two cents

Reading problems is not only about media is the burners to.

I now have a Nec ND3500AG and when i burn a disk It reads perfect in the samsung and philips drives. but crap in Thomson.

But with my old burner Nec ND2500 the same brand disk works perfect in Thomson and samsung but shit in philips drives.

Does not matter if it's + or - disks when using bit setting.

Strange but thats my experience.
