Does A Dual Vga And Component Cable Exist?
« on: December 17, 2007, 06:24:00 PM »

Background info/Setup:
I currently have my 360 hooked up with the standard MS component cable to my widescreen Loewe Xelos 5381ZW 81cm TV, via a Sony STR-DE695 AV Receiver.  Optical audio also plugged into the AV Receiver, and AV RCA audio cables plugged into wireless headphones.

I have just ordered a 360 VGA cable, so when my gf wants to watch the TV, I can plug the 360 into my PC monitor, a Viewsonic VX924 which has dual VGA and DVI inputs (the PC is using the DVI).  I will have to unplug from the 360 the current component cable, and plug in the VGA cable (I will probably leave the RCA audio from the VGA cable plugged into a switch box going to the wireless headphones so I don't have to worry about that).

Question:
Is there a cable which has BOTH component and vga output?  With the optical (or coxial, doesn't matter) digital audio and RCA AV audio as well of course.   There would have to be a switch of some sort on it I assume to choose component or vga.

I have a similar cable for my Xbox1 which has dual component and s-video/composite output, and it has a little switch to flip the output over to whichever you want.  I bought it off ebay long ago and don't have the packaging for it so don't know who made it.

This would let me have just one plug in the 360, with 2 cables coming out.

This is the only device I've seen that can do what you're looking for:
http://www.gamestop....oduct_id=802686

the problem is that there are jumpers inside the AV cables that let the console know if you're using Component or VGA, so you'll still have to reach behind and flip a switch... but at least you wont have to swap out cables.

Alternativly you could buy a VGA transcoder which would convert a component video output to VGA, then you could split the component signal with one end going to the TV and the other going to the transcoder then to your monitor... This is essentially what you were doing with your Xbox 1 since the Xbox 1 doesn't actually support VGA and needed to be transcoded externally.

A cable now appears to exist, which supports ALL connection types with a switch.  Sounds good.

It's ideal if you move your 360 around a lot and use different types of TV, or if you have your TV connected to more than one screen at once. It can't ouput to more than once screen at once, you flick between the different screens using the switch.

I would not trust the quality of that multi-purpose cable.  You're just asking for problems with no-name 3rd party cables.  Go with the official 360 vga cable with a built in vga input, or nothing at all.

Heh.  Done!  On my XBMC box I have a third party dual component/S-video & AV cable that has a switch, and the quality is the same as the official Microsoft ones, which I have too.   So hopefully the same with this one, fingers crossed.

At the moment I have the MS component and a 3rd party VGA one, so can't compare to official MS VGA cable.

I've owned 5 different brands of VGA cables, including the official ones. The only one that I have had any image problems with was the Pelican, which produced a bit of ghosting. The MS one and the Japanese ones looked fine, but I know others have had problems with the Japanese brands. Hit and miss if you ask me.

Okay so this giant cable arrived.. it has a length of about 1.5m between the console port end and the switch box, and from the switch box the 5 different cables coming out of it are about 40cm.    The 5 cables are

VGA
SCART RGB
S-Video
Component
Composite Video + RCA Stereo Audio

It has an optical audio port in the usual place on the console port plug.

On the switch box it has a switch to 4 options - VGA, RGB, HD, TV/S.   I will probably not end up using it because of this - at the moment using the MS Component cable, you can get dual video output from component and composite, so I can have component going to my main tv, and composite going to another tv (various reasons, have 2nd tv in exercise room blah blah whatever).  I was hoping it would be the same with this cable, but it looks like you have to switch between one or the other exclusively.   Also, the lengths are all bloody backwards.. of course I'm going to need a longer length between my VGA monitor and my AV receiver (component) etc.

Anyhoo, will plug it in this weekend try all the modes and take pictures.
