Force "1366x768" Instead Of 720p/1080i Etc Over Hdmi

I don't think you can, however when I connect a HDMI 360 to my TVs DVI-D socket (basically HDMI without the audio), I get VGA resolutions but with the digital crispness of DVI - it's sweet and IMHO better than 720p or 1080i. Trouble is, I can't force it as the standard HDMI resolutions aren't available!!! For the record, my Sky HD box uses the same connection with no problem.

Is there any way to make the 360 output standard resolutions such as 1366x768 over HDMI, rather than the options i currently get of 480p, 720p or 1080i. I would rather output in my displays native resolution of 1366x768 and let the xbox do all the scaling rather than set it to 720p and let my TV do the scaling. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so how to do it?

Thanks

the 360 doesn't support 1366x768 even over VGA

it DOES support 1360x768 which is close but I've heard horror stories of the picture quality getting completely trashed when the TV's scaler trys to stretch those last 6 pixels.

Everyone I know with 1366x768 displays just use 720p as it tends to give the best quality at that resolution.

If you could set your TV to perform NO scaling and live with 3pixel wide black bars then it might be worth investigating further....

I don't have an HDMI unit so I can't test but I'm curious if you could force VGA resolutions through the HDMI port by setting the AVIP jumpers to VGA.

Thanks for your detailed reply - how would I go about changing the AVIP jumpers? I have done a search but I cant seem to find much info about it.

Its ok, ive worked this out - the AVIP switches are actually on the cable itself. I will try using the HDMI cable with a VGA cable plugged in and see if this tricks the xbox into outputting VGA resolutions over HDMI.

Ive got an hdmi xbox 360 plugged into 32" hdtv via hdmi cable

I found on the original xbox using component with the tv 1080i and 480p was best setting as 720p could be choppy in some games

I have the option in xbox 360 display settings for 480p 720p and 1080i

I have choose optimal resolution to let the xbox 360 detect best settings and it gives me the setting 1360 x 768 widescreen standard everytime i run the test.

I find the picture quality is excellent no problems at all when playing games.

Is this the best setting for me and is it progressive setting or interlaced  or should i manually choose 1080i?

Many Thanks

What's that AVIP thing you're going to try? I'm also interested in wether my TV would do HDMI or VGA better. With HDMI I also can only get 720p. My TV is a Samsung LE40R2B. My laptop is connected via VGA and it does 1:1 pixel mapping with 1360x768, a 3-pixel wide black column is on the left and right.

When on 720p with the 360 it fills the whole screen, there is no 1:1 pixel mapping it seems, since there isn't a 43-pixel wide black column on left and right nor a 24-pixel wide horizontal bar at the top and bottom.

I guess the TV's the culprit the fact that it gets optimal res set to 720p with HDMI. I have yet to try VGA for the 360 in my TV, but I've already bought the HDMI cable, and didn't really want to buy the VGA now... but I'm not sure if it'll look better in my TV or not. I've read VGA may look better than HDMI depending on your TV.

So what is your TV? I've found I have no jaggies in the dashboard at 720p with my 1366x768 native TV, but there are jaggies in games. Do you notice jaggies, and if yes, where?

What do you mean? What are AVIP jumpers?  blink.gif

AVIP is the port on the back of the console that you plug your audio and video cables in to... IIRC it stands for "Audio Visual Interface Port" or something to that effect.

the jumpers are inside the connector and they tell the console what kind of cable is being plugged in. To change the jumpers on a cable you would have to crack it open and modify the cable yourself.... it might not even be possible on some cables.

As for the best resolution to use...

try them and pick whichever one looks good to you... you're the one who has to look at it when you play games so pick which one looks pleasing to your eyes.

at a technical level you want to choose the resolution that is closest to that of your TV's "native resolution" failing that 720p is the best.
