I have a 42" plasma which is connected to my xbox360 elite via HDMI to give me HD gaming

i would like to continue to play the xbox through the large tv in the same method but also be able to record/capture on my pc

which would mean somehow sending the signal from the xbox360 to the pc aswell

i used to do this with the old xbox, by using a composite splitter, so it split the video signal , one to the tv and one to the pc

with this i need to use the hdmi for my HD gaming and then possibly send a composite signal to my pc's capture card

on the xbox360 the hdmi connection is very close to the standard AV connection, i was thinking of having the hdmi plugged in and using the standard composite cable above it , connected to the pc.

at the moment this does not fit but there is a guide about taking the plastic casing off the cable so it will fit http://www.chadledford.com/?p=50, but before i do this, would the above method work

is it possible to use two outputs at once from the xbox 360 elite

one being the hdmi to the tv
two being the AV/composite yellow cable to the capture card

or has anyone else got any other suggestions on making this work, but i must still be able to use the hdmi to tv for HD gaming

if anyone has done this or has some insight on this, then replies welcomed

i found out you cannot use the composite and hd signal at the same time..

so back to the drawing board

can you use hdmi and component at the same time for video?

Why don't you just try, and get back to us... surely you have the component cable that came with your console.

As for Capturing HD it's not cheap:

$350 is the cheapest/only HDMI capture card I've seen, not to mention you need a PC beefy enough to handle it. 64bit PCI-e a few gig of ram and loads of HDD space.

I'll throw a couple things out there......

1. A lot of newer HDTV's have a video out on them. Double check to see if your does.

2. You could always look around for a cheap new/used HDMI A/V reciever. Once the signal gets into it, it should have more than one output on it, usually one for HDMI then a composite one to go to a VCR.

3. The other thing would be to sacrifice some of the video quality and when you want to record just use the composite output with a splitter.

Has anyone got any updated info on this? I'm interested in the same thing and since this is a very old thread maybe new products are out now. It has to be to a laptop though.

I record all the time, but I use component and get 480p recordings.  As for your HDMI cable, there is not much that is going to change from component.  I work with 2 gamers that used to install for tweeter and the always tell me hdmi is hype when it comes to gaming on xbox.

I record easily with a little network box and some adapters.  cost about $150

This recording can be done to any PC in the same network as the box, as well as viewed anywhere online with the right software and access.

If you game in SD you can pretty much use any cheap USB capture device available on fleabay. The most common name brand are probably Dazzle devices, though $10 generic devices work as well.

If you game in HD and capture must be to a laptop your best bet is probably the Hauppauge HD-PVR, since it has onboard encoding and is fairly lightweight on the resources of your laptop.. This is not an inexpensive solution, and you will utilize component cables for this. There are a few other options but this is probably the most common by far.

If you use HDMI to game you will pretty much require a Blackmagic Intensity Pro, a computer with a free pci express slot and either a hard drive with fairly quick write times or a raid array. As all encoding is done by your PC this can be fairly resource intensive and the file sizes are relatively large. In your situation this is most likely the most expensive option, but if you use HDMI this is essentially the only game in town.

Thanks Nillaz, the Hauppauge HD-PVR & Blackmagic Intensity Pro (+PC) are both a bit pricey for what I am after.

It wouldn't be used enough to justify the expense so I guess I would have to go with the component leads option.

I have an elite, what cheaper options are available to do video capture on a laptop. I would prefer to have a live image on my laptop rather than something that connects to the xbox and just records there e.g. USB Capture.
