Hi,
I am looking to get RGBS output from my 360 to feed a projector.
I am considering modifying the component cable that came with the 360. I will use the yellow composite cable for composite sync. Do i need to remove links in the connector and move them to "tell" the Xbox to output in RGB colourspace? I cannot see anywhere a menu option to switch output between RGB and component.

Or maybe i should just buy the RGB scart output cable and cut off the ends and put BNC plugs on the appropriate wires?


Also, Is the RGB output in HD or standard 480i/576i?

there is no way to get RGB output out of a composite cable.......the xbox detects the type of cable that is plugged into it, you cant plug in a composite and component cable at the same time and use both of them....the cable that comes with the 360 that has both has a switch to go from one to the other and if your not using that cable then the console knows automatically which cable is plugged in because of "jumpers" that are "set" in the different AV cables

its either one or the other.....and the component cable outputs RGB....hence the colors of the cables, the yellow cable is a composite cable

but you could definately make your own RGB cables.....heres the pinout

i would seriously recommend buying the component cables and cutting them........do you have a crt projector?......why is it you need to cut them?

Yes, I have a crt projector.
I have a component cable, which is different to RGB.

I need to output RGB because the cable going to the projector (which is 15 meters long) is connected to a video processor in RGB colourspace.

My dvd player is connected to this processor. The processor will act as a AV switcher when i am using the Xbox.  
This saves me having to switch cables and adjust projector settings for the x-box, which I would have to do if i am using component from the xbox

Your idea to use a SCART connector and wiring up BNC leads is probably the best.

I don't know how hard the 360 AV connector is to mod but if it's anything like any other console I've worked with it will range from difficult to impossible. Buying a cable that already has the jumpers set in the appropriate order would be best (hence SCART)

I have no idea if it supports HD over the SCART connection... if I had to guess I'd say probably not.

If that's the case you might consider using the VGA cable and building a sync joiner circuit. I know I've seen them around as it's a popular circuit among MAME enthusiasts to adapt PC video outputs to genuine Arcade monitors (Which are progressive scan RGBS).

The RGB official output cable actually terminates in a SCART connector.  So you would need to cut the end off and then re terminate in BNC or whatever you want = nighmare ...

An much easier way IMO is to modify the Component lead as you originally said - it has the correct ends already (replace the phono's with BNC's etc on all 4 signal wires) and then you just need to bridge from pin 22 to pin 24 and pin 26 to 28 inside the plug. (easy - see below)

The easiest way of doing this is to just bridge ALL the switch connections on the existing switch on the stock plug (the HDTV/TV one).  Composite bridges 22 to 24 (like we need) and component bridges (26 to 28) - so just bridge them both at the same time for RGB output.  Wires will already be there so no messing with the inline connectors (I know EXACTLY what you mean TwistedS..  )
