Recently bought a Samasung 226bw monitor. Beautiful monitor and picture (on PC)  but the native resolution is 1680x1050. I'm using Microsoft VGA cables what resolution should I set the 360 for?

Heres the specifications link

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16824001096

Thanks

The Xbox 360 doesn't support the native resolution of your monitor...

Set the xbox 360 to 1280x720 and see how that looks - this is the native resolution for 95% of all Xbox 360 games which means that your monitor will be doing 100% of the scaling and your 360 wont be doing any.

then set the Xbox 360 1920x1080 and see how that looks - there are a small handful of games that support 1080p (splinter cell, virtua tennis, and NBA street) those games will be passed natively while the remaining xbox 360 titles will be upscaled. your display will the downscale that upscaled image. It's not ideal but it might work alright

Finally set the Xbox 360 to 1280x1024 wide and see how that looks - this will cause the xbox 360 to upscale part way and your monitor will upscale the rest of the way.

in short:

1280x720 - 100% monitor upscaling

1920x1080 - 50% xbox 360 upscaling and 50% monitor downscaling (with the occasional 100% monitor downscaling)

1280x1024 - 50% xbox 360 upscaling and 50% monitor upscaling

try those three resolutions and see which one looks best, It's unfortunate that the Xbox 360 can't scale direction to 1680x1050 as it does seem to be quite a popular resolution these days. If they ever do add that resolution to a future revision of the dashboard I'll recommend you try that as well.

My Dell that is 1680*1050 looks best when set to 1280*768, I would guess because that is a 16*10 res just like the 1680*1050. If I set it to another res, the monitor just scales it back to 1280*768 anyways.....

How can your monitor "scale it back" to that? LCD displays ALWAYS scale to their native resolution (unless you're already sending it a signla of those dimensions), in your case 1680x1050...

BTW, 1280x768 it NOT an exact 16:10 res... 16:10 gives 1,6 exactly (like 1680x1050) where this one gives 1,66666666666666666666666.... you get the idea...

It doesn't matter whether I feed it 1360*768 or 1280*768, it always shows 1280*768. Of course it scales it to native, but thats what it shows. And 1280*768 is the closest you can get to 16*10 from the 360.

Your monitor always scales to it's native resolution... if it scaled to anything else you'd get black borders on all sides of the screen where there are pixels not being used... LCDs much like plasma and DLPs are "fixed pixel" displays meaning they can only ever display 1 resolution, their native resolution.

the resolution it notes on the screen is the incoming resolutions.

most of the time this simply tracks the vertical resolution and makes an assumption as to what the horizontal is... it's simply the way it was programmed... nothing more... most displays don't actually measure the horizontal they just measure the vertical and assume the horizontal is whatever...

I use 1280x1024 Wide, it looks great. In my head I can't figure out how it's able to make a 5:4 resolution look good on my monitor without bars, but I'll take it.

when you set it to "wide" and the resolution is closer to a square the console actually assumes that the pixels are rectangular in shape so that when your monitor stretches it to the width of the wide screen it looks appropriate...

This is beneficial mostly in plasmas because older/cheaper plasma actually do have rectangular pixels... many EDTV plasmas will have a 1024x768 resolutions in a 16:9 wide format.

Between these two, are there any differences relating jaggies?
Visually and for what i've tested I prefer 1280x720, things are more proprocional..but I've got jaggies all the way with a 22"(depending on games of course) at both resolutions.
