No Picture But There Is Sound
« on: May 22, 2007, 04:28:00 PM »

After spending a few hours doing more research, does anybody think it could be due to a CPU problem? Over heating?

Should I open it up to fix it or send it to MS?  I'm still covered by Warranty.

Thanks

I Heard that this could be due to the GPU, either a bad solder joint on it, I've already replaced the X clamps, then after a few days this happened, I overheated it and no luck, anyway to fix this? they say that the last option would be to do a BGA rework, but where the heck is the electronic shop when you need one?!?!?!

Mine did what you described to a "T" and nothing short of opening up the box can fix it... luckily I had extened my warranty a month before and was able to send it off and have it fixed... was a launch box btw... I could even chat with my friend who sent me a private chat but no picture... if you don't have warranty then I can't tell ya what to do... I took the easy route

btw... I believe it is either a bad GPU or bad solder joints not sure.. M$ fixed it for me smile.gif

I have the exact same problem.  I decided to send it to a guy on Ebay, he does bga reflow, however he said mine can't be fixed, he said the video encoder is unrepairable.  He refunded my money.

I have the same problem.  It started with playing a 1920x1080 WMV VC-1 on 1080i component.  While playing it off a DVD-R, the amount of colors on the screen was dropping in bits.  Stopped the video and went to the dashboard, problem still there.  After powering off and powering on, the problem was still apparent, and gradually got worse until the screen became black with a vertical pink bar on the ride side of the screen.  Eventually the screen went completely black.  The sound was still working, but the next day audio was gone as well.

Any help?

I almost wanted to buy one with this problem on eBay, but after reading this i doubt it can be fixed mad.gif

Maybe there is a slight chance of a bad connector in the A/V port?

It seems to be a problem with the analog connections, as digital audio out still works fine.  Yesterday the video somehow came back for a little, but failed when attempting to change output to 1080i.

This happened to my launch console last month. It was the thermal paste. It was dry and hard as a rock. Replaced it with some AS5 with the x clamp fix. All is well again.

M$ wants 140 dollars to fix mine, which they also said i get a  one year warranty (if i pay the 140 dollars).... They can't even to tell me what the problem is, and from what i hear that it might take up to a month to get my 360 back .  Really don't know what to do.... unsure.gif

Same thing has happened to me the past few days, I've changed the thermal paste and still the same, Sometimes i can get it back on by switching the cables over av cable to RGB or vice versa, But the graphics look weird like a swirl affect, This goes away after a while, Then when i switch the xbox off and back again theres no picture.

Hi everyone:

All of the mentioned video problem have a greater repair success rate when the GPU is reballed. The same goes for some of the more stubborn game freezes. I've reballed the GPU on 10 console and only one could not fix GPU, it was probably damaged when the customer overheat it doing the xclamp reflow.

Reballing is not cheap but it does work. It's the best solution to the 3RLOD, all though professional reflowing will repair most problem, there still the issue that the solder balls under go numerous temperature cycles making them brittle which will also require a higher temperature to reflow them. Note that the xclamps must be remove to prevent any re-occuring 3RLOD's. That being said any existing system that does not have the 3RLOD should be removing the xclamps as a prevent measure. I'm in the process of putting together a tutorial which allow the removal of the xclamp without drilling or adding bolts to fix it. It use's all of the exsisting hardware with no modification needed to remount CPU and GPU.Please not that this method will only work with systems that have been reflowed or do not have the 3RLOD.

My 360 just shit out on me for good earlier today.

2 days ago I was playing a game with a friend and the screen got all goofy like the resolutions were resetting. Then I turned it off and called it a night.

Today I started to play a game and all was fine 4 minutes in BAM. Green screen. Restart - Blue screen. Restart black screen.

Took it over to a friends and used his cables, still not working.

Wrapped a jacket around it for 30 minutes....

now working.

I'm probably going to sell it or trade it in while it's still working and buy another one.

Flashed f/w too, so no sticker.

Life sucks.

From what i read from all the forums about this on the interweb i think my GPU is dead, and i don't want to pay 140 dollars for a refurbished one.. I know this is sad but playing my 360 is the only thing that got me through the day and now its gone.  Am 28 i live with parents again and have no job for the past year and half and now my 360 is gone think am gonna swallow the bottle of pills of xanax i have and end it.
