From what i read from all the forums about this on the interweb i think my GPU is dead, and i don't want to pay 140 dollars for a refurbished one..

Same here, No way i'm going to get it repaired or buy a new one for it to go again in 6months to a year, I've had mine around a year and 2 months, Some months i went a couple of weeks without switching it on, So it didn't get used much at all, I have a PS2 thats 5 years old and hasen't had 1 problem till this day, I think i'll wait till the PS3 drops in price and get one of those instead.

I have a question, After reballing whats stopping the 360 overheating again and going tits up again like the first time?

What is causing the 360 to red if the first place is the xclamp design. When you reflow the microchips and remove the xclamps it keeps the 3RLOD from re-occuring. I have systems that I've repaired including my own that are over 2 1/2 months old without red lights. For the past two months I have two 360 on a test bench that has been running  24/7 and another that cycle on & off on a daily bases both are red light free.

I just wanted to post to hopefully bring new interest to this thread and problem.  I, too, have this "Have Audio but no Video" problem.

I was just sitting on the dashboard talking with a friend in chat, when I noticed the colors were bleeding on the dash.  I thought maybe rebooting the system would fix the problems.  No, rebooting creates more problems.  Like no more video.

I have not modded my xbox, I have not even opened it to change the xclamps for the 3 RLOD.  I've tried friend's video cables, I've tried the two triggers and Y trick to reset the video settings.  I've also tried flipping the HD/SD switch on the video cables.

After searching the AV board for this problem, I can tell that several people are in the same boat as us (hell, there's 3 threads on this out of 20 threads), yet no one has any idea of what is the problem.  Although twistedsymphony has said in another thread (somewhat out of context) "it's probably the ANA scaler chip."  That's the closest there is to an answer from what I have found.

My xbox is from launch (12/04/05 to be specific), and hasn't had any problems until the other day, but that also means I'm out of warranty.  I was told by Microsoft $99 is the fee to fix this.  That's a little unnecessary especially since the burden of responsibility should not be on the consumer if the product fails.

As I said earlier my xbox's warranty has not been voided, despite my warranty having expired.  I'm wondering if there is a way to invoke the three red lights, so that I would be covered under warranty.  The MS rep I spoke to on the phone said that would be acceptable provided I didn't open the xbox.  The only thing is has anybody ever tried to have the 3RLOD happen to them?  I did come across a Stress Test thread that may be beneficial, however, no video output makes it hard to navigate a game, let alone get to a point where the graphics are especially demanding.

Anyhow, I was just posting to bump this thread, and hopefully get some fresh ideas in here as to how to remedy this problem.

you can force the rrod by letting the xbox overheat. cover all ventilation holes by a some towels and let it heat up. after 20-30 mins it should start blinking. now you could try to *NOT* remove the power cord (regular power down doesnt work when it overheated) and just let the heat build up even more until its fried tongue.gif

This happened to me a couple of days ago. Yesterday testing and what not i noticed that the box now gives 2 red lights (an overheating sign) whenever i turn it on to test and start a game (it happens on the dashboard too but it takes longer obviously). Both problems are most likely related since the console has never had any overheating problems and right after i lose video it starts happening. I will replace the x-clamps today and also put arctic silver on both the cpu and gpu. Last night i got the console to display video a couple of times i turned it on (it was disassembled). I reassembled it and it's back in a non working state (still no video). That leads me to believe it might be related to bad cooling on the gpu. I'll report what happens later.

I could not replace the x-clamps because i did not find the correct screws for the job, i'll search for some tomorrow. I did however put AS5 on the GPU and CPU. The old thermal compound was not even on the dyes and was already very dry. When i did that and put the heatsinks back on pretty much nothing happened. So i disconnected the fans and let the console overheat for a couple of minutes. After i did this video was displayed and i was able to play a game. The screen blacked out like 10 minutes into it and glitches started appearing in what looked to be a loop (like what would happen if you changed resolutions over and over again). My tv did not display any other resolution number of the one i had selected on the dashboard (i tested 720p and 1080i). Right now my console is totally naked and i put my hand on the metal where the gpu should be and it's blazing hot there, not even as hot as where the cpu should be. I'm letting the console cool down for a bit and after it does i'll test again. Sorry about the double post but this forum is pretty weird and i see no edit button.

Ok, Ill add my 2 cents.

As seen in this pic...I suffer from the color problems as described by most of you guys before you get the black screen. I however never got the black screen, but instead had alot of strange colors like below.

IPB Image

Here is how I fixed it (I'm still experimenting, but its definately ALOT better than it was. Only had colors one time in a month and a half of pretty regular gaming, but as soon as I tightened the M5 bolts, colors went away. (Think its fixed/90% sure)

To fix it, I did RBJTech's M5 X-Clamp replacement. I also cleared all old paste and applied Artic Silver 5. I tightened down the bolts to a reasonable, but rather loose config.  The fix immediately fixed all my colors for about a month and then they came back one night. I immediately opened the box, tightened the M5 bolts and the problem IMMEDIATELY disappeared and stayed away. Now as to what is causing my problem, I like the overheating theory and it kinda makes sense. When I did get colors that one time, I just kept playing. As I played the colors got worse and worse and worse.  HOWEVER, people keep talking about OVENS. RBJTech also talks about stressed BGU pins, but I've never heard of BGU pins. I however HAVE heard about BGA Ball Grid Arrays. (What is a Ball Grid Array)BGAs fasten down the GPU and CPU to the board. Its like lets put a couple dollops of solder on the board...set the chip down on those little solder balls.....and lets BAKE IT. Hence all the recent talk of Ovens. This is what I have made of it anyway.

Since I don't have an X-Ray machine or an Oven, I can't check the integrity of my BGA's under my GPU. However, you'd think that a tight M5 X-Clamp replacement would tighten the connection between the Chip and the BGA and the motherboard, to fix the problem. This might just be the problem too, and that is what is fixing it. I really don't know, but it seems my 360 is working. People suffering from the no video should at least try the M5 X-Clamp replacement method. It couldn't hurt. And from all the accounts I've read of (Prolly 10-15 now, People start off with colors like me...then progress to a black screen. I fixed my colors...so you'd think it would fix black screens too.

I'd be interested if there is a poor man's version of inspection BGA's and rebaking them without all the expensive equipment. Heat Gun method and reflows. Would a heat gun really be able to reflow th BGA under the GPU? I want to KNOW know what is causing this color bleeding/artifacts >>>> black screen problem.

Hmm. hacktek's report of overheating signs + no video, suggests this might be an overheating deal. I never got any red lights associated with my colors, but then I never got a black screen either. However, I do know that there is QUITE a connection between the colors and black screen as exampled by a couple of accounts on this forum. Another thing that is important.....as hacktek mentioned. When this color artifacting occurs.....users are not able to change their resolutions. They are tied together....if you are getting colors you won't be able to change your res either.

My question for the people suggesting (or know) that it is a reflow only correctable situation. WHICH points in particular need to be reflowed. Is it all of the bga under the GPU? Which points exactly?

it happend to me, my colors got distorted and then i got the blank screen. i replaced my x-clamps and thremal paste and now it works great. ms put two drops of thremal paste in there and it was all dryed up. no wonder it wsnt working.   mad.gif  i think the thermal paste gets so dryed up it cracks and breaks away from the heat sinks. after that theres no cooling at all which in due time funs up your box.

oh yea it didnt work the first time turning it on after fixing it

I also fixed my Xbox360 using the M5 x-clamp method with AS5. All was well for a few months, but the problem just occurred again, and this time, the video is not coming back on at all.   mad.gif It doesnt sound like there is a permanent fix for this.  Looks like I'll be heading towards PS3 territory  rolleyes.gif

I had no video and sound only, with no error codes flashing.

When I first did the x-clamp I did it very tight and got the 3 rings right away even tho the heat sinks were cold to the touch. So I just loosen the x-clamp screws and it came back to no video but now no 3ROD.

So I took it apart and did 1 min warm up, 2mins on high with the heatgun along with aluminium foil to cover the caps and plastic.

With AS5 I just tighten the x-clamps loose but snug. Now it works. I will be adding a 120 cooling fan on top and remove the DVD to an external case to keep it cool.

We'll see how long it last??
my 2cents.

I had the same problem. I unplugged and replugged literally everything involved in the XBOX, the TV, the VCR (which I use to route the 360 to the TV) system and the audio showed up again after restarting.

Reballing is not cheap but it does work. It's the best solution to the 3RLOD, all though professional reflowing will repair most problem, "superbee"

NO VIDEO ISSUE:

So how do we do this at home or do we have to ship out.  How do you know if your unit still has warranty? I bought mine on Ebay 4 days ago and am now having the "no video" issue. This stresses me out. Dang it sucks.

Ohh yeah, I have no video but have sound no RROD. For those who wonder, this is not your cables, TV, HDTV/TV  its the unit.  Dont buy cables. (from what I have read for the last 3 hrs)

Any real way to fix this? Anyone who knows how and can tell us.

Dang this sucks.  At this point I might just go buy a brand new unit for $199.

THOUGHT: What if we shipped our units to a friend or another address and bought shipping insurance? Then claim that it was broke in shipping?  ANyone ever had to do a claim on a broken item like that?  Do they give you the valued amount refund? Just trying to beat the system

PM me or email, whatever.
