i am using this cable
IPB Image
One side is plugged to the xbox while the other is plugged into my speaker system
i get a red light going through but cant get any sound
i cycled throught the modes and fiddled with the dashboard but to no avail
any ideas
thanks

If you're getting the red light from the 360, then the problem lies with your speaker system.  If you have another optical audio system, try hooking the 360 up to it and see if it works.  If it does work, then you've found the problem.  If it doesn't work, then it's back to the drawing board.

Ensure the 360 is set to Dolby Digital / Optical output and your receiver is set to Dolby Digital and not DTS or MPEG2 Audio etc.

I set my speaker system to dolby digital and plugged the round end to where it says s/pdif optical.
The square end is in my 360 and im getting light
still no sound

Hmmm - have you set it to the correct channel - ie Aux or whatever ?  and the 360 is definately set for optical output ? That's all I can think of ...

is it because my input for my speaker system might be coax?

laugh.gif well if you can insert the optical connector and it's labelled as 'input' then it should be fine.  If it says 'output' then that's why it don't work..  - it may be an output for a minidisc player or such like.  If you only have coax input - then the 360 can provide this with a little bit of hacking - don't know of any coax output leads (not sure why though, because it's perfectly possible..)

this is my speaker system
http://support.dell....ocs/acc/ada885/
There are two analog slots which work when i plug red/white
But one s/pdif slot which doesnt want to work
Edit:
When i looked at the documentation i think it is s/pdif output

.. lol, it's coax ....

There is also some weird dongle type thing that you can choouse from PCM or AC3 ...

You'll either need to get an optical to coax convertor (has an external power supply) and plug that into the system, hack a 360 lead that has a built in optical jack and splice off the two wires required for the coax connection or solder the coax leads to the mainboard and provide your own coax (via phono) connector ...

Have a look here for the coax connectors on the mainboard ...

Also - b4 doing any of that - change the speaker system to AC3 / PCM to see if that makes any difference - I'm not sure how you are physically interfacing a optical SPDIF connector to a Coax (by the looks of it phono) input ...

.. if you don't want to start hacking - then something like this shoud do the trick ...

Optical to Coax Adapter
