Permanent Fix For Towel Trick
« on: March 20, 2007, 11:59:00 PM »

So I have had my 360 since day one.  It was worked perfectly up until now.  I do have a two year warranty from Best Buy but because I have a flashed firmware I would rather not try and bring it back.  So the details.  Today I turned my box on and bang the three rings of death.  My heart sankĀ…  It would start up and about 5 seconds in the ring would start to flash.. There was also no display.  So I took it apart blew out the dust and looked around for anything that may have caused the problem specificly around the video card as I was not getting any display.  After not seeing anything I packed everything back up and booted.  Same thing.  So I figured I would try the towel trick.  To my amazement it worked!!!  My box has been running for about 20 minutes now no problem.  So I am wondering if there is a permanent fix for this. And if so how could I go about finding where the problem is at?

Thanks

Towel trick is when you put a towel in front of the vent, making the heat go higher and somehow fix it?

It's discouraged because it's just temporary. More permanent is replacing the "X" clips that flex the board, breaking the contacts.

There's some guides where it's replaced with a rubber stopper with a threaded hole for screws. Check around.

sorry to tell you the honest truth, but here it comes :  I tried the towel trick on 3 xbox360s , 2 of them worked for about 5 days be4 they died, didnt help with the other one at all. after that, I tried the heat gun trick ( a lot more complicated than just putting the towel around ) , and  3 out of 3 worked again for about 2 days be4 they all just died. so if you have the ring of death, the chance of fixing it yourself is real slim.

There's a bottom line, here, that I've been trying to get at for a long time.  These "fixes" aren't fixes.  The are temporary...very temporary.
albertgao said it right...chances are VERY high you won't be able to fix it yourself.

yes it is possible to damage other components when heating up the 360 but i can garentee non of your components damaged if u did the towel trick it hardly ever does
wht i would recommend
is search the forum for replacement of the Xclamps using RBJ tut
and put some cooling mods in yr xbox like addton fan and those thinks and placing heatsink of the north bride and south bridge
for me wht i did was i did the heatgun fix( search the forum for tht ) thn i did replacement of the Xclamps, and added addtion cooling mods
