Hd Component Vs Hd Vga
« on: February 25, 2007, 08:20:00 AM »

Well I had the HD Component cables for a while and they looked great! Now I have the VGA in. Now That I have the VGA in I dont know if I want to keep it. My resolution is 1360x768. I believe that that is considered 1080p. (not sure) I noticed that the VGA cables dull the picture down.  The colors are not as vivid. The picture is smoother (a little cleaner) but its almost as i there is a slight blur on everything. I notice this the most on things like the dashboard words and the Crackdown map. They are just not crisp like the 1080i HD cables were.

Im not good with tech specs but which is a better quality setup. The Component 1080i setup. Or the VGA 1360x768 setup?

Which do you prefer?

1080P is 1920x1080.  While I'm sure the picture is still good, you are running quite a bit under that.  The results of the VGA cable depend on your tv.  On some sets it looks great, others, not so good.  You can play around with your picture settings to try and improve the image.  The 360 sends out video levels where as the VGA input on most tvs expect PC levels.  You may not be able to compensate enough.  Switch back to component if it gives a better picture.

It looks as though you don't have the newest console update that allows 1920x1080 over VGA. This update will also fix the washed out colors that you have. I can tell you than on my 61" Samsung the VGA is much better than the component.

Yeah I have the update. It shows thatI can select it but when I do the screen goes black and it reverts back to the next lowest setting. Any ideas guys? I know for a fact my tv does 1080p.

What TV do you have.  Just because it is a 1080p TV, it does not mean that your TV accepts a 1080p signal via the VGA connector.  It sounds as if yours does not since the picture goes black when you select that resolution.

Give us a little more info here.  What is the make/model of your TV?

You owners manual should have a section on supported resolutions through the PC input.

Ahhh! Its soo hard to decide! Component displays more vivid colors but the picture is a lil jagged. The VGA is alot smoother with a slight bit more detail in some things and plays DVDs 100 times better (but smaller not fullscreen) than my SD DVD player but has a little bit of a blur effect.

XGA is 1,024 x 768.  Your panel will upconvert this to 1080p for display.  Using component you can input 1080i which again, your panel will deinterlace to 1080p.  Most games are done in 720p resolution which is closer to what you are sending over VGA. There's no right or wrong answer here.  Just run what looks best to you.
