Disappointed With The Vga Hd Cables! Help!
« on: January 27, 2007, 05:02:00 AM »

Just received my VGA HD Cables for my 360 system. I have a Samsung Syncmaster 940BW 19" Widescreen monitor (which is amazing btw) and i have to say i am terribly disappointed with the cables!!

The screen is blurry (the text mainly, not extremely blurry but its very noticeable), the colors are rash and just doesnt look sharp and amazing like the reviews said. I am sure there is a problem at my end and i am missing something. But i dont knw what it is!

My monitor's native resolution is 1440x960 (which the cables doesnt support) so i go to the next supported resolution 1360*768. Till the screen looks like crap. I thought it was my monitor so i tried it on a Benq 19" monitor whos native resolution is 1280*1024 and the screen still looks crap.

Please help me out here!! I so dont want to go back to playin on my HDTV cause i get very few hours of play time. Thanks!

Are you using the official MS VGA cable, or some cheap third party knockoff?

It's all about the quality of the cables.

I made my own VGA adapter and I'm using a high quality VGA cable, and the picture looks crystal clear on my Dell 21" monitor.

Nope, not the originals (but it does say it is OEM). I got it from eBay:
This one.

I have it on 1280x768 as that resolution is 16:10 aspect ratio which my monitor supports.

Will buying the original cable work?? Because i have read reports of people having problems (washed out color) with the original cables too.

Is there no work around it?

Dont dessesperate
Your tv is fine the cable is fine the xbox is fine the problem is
the Imcompatebelity off some monitors on the xbox
the xbox vga cable does NOT respect the normal voltages the ones like your grafic board to your Monitor

Bassicly The monitor expect a range in one wire  and the xbox send another range thru VGA in that wire
so in some  monitors the screnn colours are wash out
Thats a very normal problem with xbox and vga a lot off people are suffering including me
I have a Maestro 22 inch widescren with 10 days and i have the exact same problem with the colours
they are just not vibrant vivid ; (

Firts  solution  is wait until Microsoft finnaly fix the VGA output valours in the xbox with a dasboard update
second  get a Component to VGA transcoder arrond 50 euros
That will work fine I have already order mine one  x2VGA 2
Because you connnect componnet to the trancoder and the transcoder will output vga but with the rigth colours

Cheers and good Luck
i spend 3 days reseraching the web and now i Know this is real 50 % off vga connections are with the colours
Wahs out
and the Problem is Xbox Vga valours are imcompatible in some monitors
resulting in a huge colours problem.
I hope that i have Helped
and sorry 4 my Inglish

I would have thought that my monitor is incompatible but it doesnt work my Benq 19" or my Dell 20.1" 2005FPW

And over here, someone has the exact same monitor as mine and it works just fine for him:

Just to add i Have bougth this screnn just to use with the xbox PACKARD BELL Maestro 220 WDV 22"
(IMG:http://www.hardware.no/tester/skjerm/packard_bell_220w/innledning.jpg)
So 4 me this thing is alsso a really big pain in the ass  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif)

Just google,,,, xbox 360 vga colours wash out..... and you will get the Big picture off the problem (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif)

There is a trick you can use in the dell to fix this in the service menu
you can change the valours to the rigth way just wait i will find in a few seconds

I have tries 3 cables the microsoft VGA one from a friend a cheap one that sucks a one from Monster cables
The chepeast one is cheat the microsoft is OK but the monter is great about 20% more sharpeness
But the problem with the colours are there in the 3 cables so 4 me the only way is the transcoder
God knows when Microsoft will fix this with an update LOL

And if they ever release the HDMI this will be over we just connect to the Monitots  with a DVI cable and that will be Greate  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) no more VGA SHIT
Cheers

were you go is copy and paste from other forum

Xbox 360 washed out VGA fix for 2405fpw.

This should work with a variety of Dell displays if they have roughly the same service menu. Probably Samsung ones as well.

Disclaimer: If you just mess with the service menu willy nilly you could break your screen, that is if you can't remember what the numbers were before you changed them. The changes you do to make this work will mean that a regular PC VGA input will be all wrong. Write down the numbers beforehand.

First.
Get/make a black jpeg and a white jpeg big enough so they fill your xbox's display when you look at them in the picture viewer. You could just pause a video when the screen is black. That will probably do. But I found that flipping back and forward between the white and black was useful.

If you have already put your settings to crazy colour levels to try and improve the washed-outness a bit, it's probably best to put them back to default. Same for the brightness and contrast.

Now you need to get into the service menu. Turn off the monitor and turn it back on whilst holding down the menu and the "+" button. Open the menu and you should see the panel version number at the top.
Now go down to the "factory reset" menu at the bottom. In there is now an extra page at the bottom "factory".
Which looks like this. Sorry about the camera phone.

Don't worry about most of that. Mess with it if you want, I'm not your wife/mother and don't care if you break it.

If you have a WB option on there somewhere, apparently you can fiddle with that and it will auto set your "white balance" you need the black and white pictures to do that. Put up your black xbox screen then press "WB". It should say 1 somewhere. Then press it again while you have a white xbox screen up. And that's a 2 I think. That should be it.

If you don't have "WB" anywhere on the page......
What we need to play with is the "Offset 1" and "Offset 2". I found that bringing down the offset 2 values to zero (from 50 something, I didn't write them down) and putting the offset 1 values up to around 100 works the best.
edit: You might not have to change Offset 1, see how it goes.

The screen colour can jump about from very red to very green and
blue for no reason. Once it did that I just went back a value and moved the other values in the row closer. I really messed it up at one point, luckily I got it back. So take note, these values don't reset when you press reset. The numbers go back but the picture stays the same.

When you like what you have, inky black and a good bright, colourless white. (don't worry about fine tuning the colours too much, do that from the normal colour menu). Make sure when you leave the menu you don't go over the preset colour settings highlighted in the red box. Just go straight up to the exit button. If you move the selection over them they flip the colours to the presets again and it throws off what you have done, leaving you with a bright red picture and things like that.

When done you will have better colours and blacks than the component cable with pin sharp 1080p.

« Reply #12 on: January 30, 2007, 02:18:00 AM »

I read a year old thread on some forum and one guy suggested to use the 720p resolution. And i did and behold! The dashboard looks clear, a little cloudy but clear and sharp. I was happy until i fired up Lost Planet and saw the pixelation on the explosions (and pixelation on the front window of a car in Saints Row)! I have a gut feeling that my games run on SDTV rather than on HDTV resolution.

Any help in this matter!?

Ok here is what I found with my experience with the MS VGA and my 42 LCD

The 42"s native rez is 1366X766 i belive. If I set the display output to 1360X760 I get the minor washed out colors. If I set the xbox to 1280X720 the picture is perfect, exactly the same as using component, mabye a bit sharper. But no more washed out colors. I dont know why it does this, but since ive had the xbox set like this the vga is perfect and is definatly better than component.
