Best Setting 720p Or 1040i Over Component Cable

QUOTE(tomcat75 @ Nov 21 2006, 02:42 AM) View Post
Hi all just to ask, for a while ive had my 360 plugged in my 32" tv with a vga cable.

I,ve now moved my 360 upstairs and have it connected to my 19" Samsung SyncMaster 940mw lcd tv/monitor.

I have it connected by component, what is the best setting 720p or 1040i ?

The screen size is 19" widescreen with a 8ms response rate.

I do know the differance in what they are, but was just wondering?

Is it worth using the 1040 interlaced with the screen size been small and also the display having a fast response rate.

Any help appreciated

thanks all happy gaming smile.gif

I am going to admit that I didn't read your post, just the title. There is no standard for 1040i. There is however, one for 1080i. I use 1080i on my crt's and it looks good but I ALWAYS recommend 720p when you can use it. There are two reasons. They are both indiscernable to the untrained eye but they are there. progressive draws all 720 lines each pass. Interlaced draws half of the 1080 lines each pass. This means that you actually have more detail with 720p. It is almost cancelled out due to your eyes not being able to pick up the difference at the higher resolution. Also, 720p runs at 60fps whereas 1080i runs at 30fps. The untrained eye(or really any eye for that matter) will not notice the difference but it is still recommended.

if thats a LCD screen i doubt you can tell the difference on a 19" between progressive & interlaced apart from slightly difference between the refresh rate.

so 1080i should give you sharper image quality.

edit: it does dephend on the scaler on the TV, but overall you shouldn't see that much difference on a small screen.

yeah I've been checking the specs and also what native resolution does. I thought it would up or down scale to the native resolution depending on weather I use 720p or 1080I.

I've tried to use 1080p it wont have it

on the, on screen menu of the monitor it gives a status resolution of what its running in, but I don't know if this is accurate or just a equivalent.

when in 720p it shows 1280 x 720p as its status

when in 1080i it shows 1920 x 1080i as its status

As I say I don't know if that's a equivalent and its actually down or up scaling to the native resolution. If that is the case it is best to select the one nearest to avoid the adjustment?

I've also tried a VGA cable, its clear but the colour is washed out and not good at all

Thanks for the help everyone

its never straight forward is it hehe

I've had the same results with VGA on my DLP set also.  The resolution status you are getting is correct.  720p is 1280x720, 1080i is 1920x1080.  As you've said, your tv is scaling everything either up or down to 1440 x 900 so your not going to get native either way.  Just use whatever looks best to you. There really isn't any right or wrong answer. Most 360 games are internally rendered at 720p though so you MAY have better results using that.

surley the best posible result would be to use your VGA cable again and set to the resolution the cloest to your lcds native res.

No the VGA cable produces poor colour.
I have the same Samsung monitor, I use 720p via component.  Looks great and very smooth much better than 1080i.  Interlaced source is never as smooth Non-interlaced.
