I was just at a local Best Buy and noticed that Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog claims to support 1080p.  On the back of the disc it says: 480p/720p/1080i/1080p

Is this true?  Can 360 games actually output 1080p?  If so, how can this be done?  I thought the max that component video cables can output is 1080i?  I didn't think that component had the bandwidth capable to do 1080p.  With the recent Live update that enables 1080p output, can we expect to see more games come out with 1080p support?

This is subject of mass confusion.

The Xbox 360 CAN and WILL display games at 1080p over component.

It is the HD-DVD player that requires the VGA cable to display 1080p. (It does 1080i over component).
You will also need the VGA cable to take advantage of upscaling current DVD movies past 480p.

 idk about sonic being displayed in native 1920 x 1080 resolution... i'm pretty sure all xbox 360 games come native in 1280 x 720 resolution and are upscaled to 1920 x 1080... now weather its progressive or interlaced depends on your cable and your monitor(some monitors like LCD's display interlaced signals in progressive mode anyway), component now supports interlaced AND progressive 1920 x 1080 resolutions... VGA i think is always progressive

Some games are ran at 1920x1080, 1280x720 is just supposed to be the minimum. If you have a set that does all the res's you can check for yourself. It's easy to tell as 1920x1080 is alot sharper than 1280x720.

Can I get 1080p on games with the ms vga cable and a vga/dvi converter? My 65" Mitts has a setting for dvi - analog or digital. I can't get 1080p with component.

Hey,

I am slightly confused by this.  Does that mean I need two cables to get 1080p?  When playing games hook it to the component and when watching movies connect via VGA?

Yes I can and it looks like shit. The washed out look that doesn't fill the screen. Back to component 1080i.

Depends on your TV/projector.  The vga cable ooks very good without washed out colors on  many HDTV's, but on some it does not.  It has to do with how your tv interprets the color levels; 'pc levels' or 'video levels'.  The 360 sends out video lvls.  The problem is a good number of HDTV's, as well as all pc monitor, interpret it as pc lvls and hence the washed out image.

If MS would ever include an option in the console setting to switch between video lvls and pc lvls, then that would fix the problem.  But because MS thinks console gamers are stupid as not wanting to confuse them (which is unfortunetely true in many cases), i'm guessing that is why they do not add the option.

What the hell.  Everything I had read before said the HD-DVD drive would do 1080p over component.  You just couldn't upconvert standard DVDs with component, you had to use VGA.  Now, you have to have VGA to do 1080p with HD-DVD??  This is gonna piss me off.  I just specifically bought a new TV based on the fact that it could accept 1080p over component.  When did everything change?
