They often cost $250 just for a replacement and whilst they may have a "10,000 hour life" they are just as prone to blowing as a normal lightbulb is , if not more.
Firstly most front projection lamps range from $200 to $400 and they are not rated for 10,000 hours (generally 2000 to 4000 hours with some going higher) .
Secondly the lamps are not as prone to blowing as a normal lightbulb if you operate the projector properly (now of course there are units out there that could have certain defects which can lead to premature lamp failure but it is not very common and not on a large scale) .

Actually the InFocus IN76 cannot be purchased for under $1500 ( unless you find a good deal on a used unit or it is being sold from an unauthorized dealer which means no warranty from InFocus and even then the best street price that I have seen was about $1800 ) .
