Unless your xbox is un-updated, yeah it is.

Yeah right smile.gif and maybe I haven't plugged the power cable in ! or I've confused the xbox with my dreamcast.

Ah well then , its annoying Ive wasted $20 on a useless VGA cable...

The problem is you skimped and bought a POS vga cable.  Next time spend the extra $20 to go with your $3.5K HDTV  laugh.gif, and get the MS $40 vga cable and i bet everything will be fine.  Funny what people will do to save a buck.

blink.gif wow i'd be interested to see how that looks.  i use 1240x1024 (which rocks) on a 1920x1080 native res display.

I guess my definition of shitty looking is a bit more extreme than most , for example I view anything other than 1280x1024 rez on a 19" PC LCD as unplayble.

I did exchange the "cheap cable $15USD with a M$ one, and it made no difference.

I'll go take some pics and post the diff, I guess with a cheap nasty LCD TV or Plasma there would be not much noticable difference.  (will be back in 5 mins) tongue.gif

Component720p Vs 1360 VGA rez  (Click for full size pic)

IPB Image IPB Image

And yes I have , applied all the latest XBL updates, spent 30min on the contrast/colour/brightness/sharpness etc settings,.

tried two different cables, expensive & more expense.

confirmed the blurry washed out problem on a Sony Bravia 32" LCD with the same results.

That's weird.  I swear I cannot see a difference on my 2405.  At all.

Of course, I never tried it with my original 360, just the one that I got back from Microsoft when I had to send my orig. in.

Sharpness controls are inaccessable in VGA mode, I can plug my laptop in and it's perfect, as good as a normal PC monitor in tearm of sharpness. may there is a sharpness option in the xbox menu ?

Depending on the TV, 1360x768 source will display a 1:1 pixel map on a 1366x768 set.. If this is the case, you will notice 6 rows of pixels missing on the left side.  1:! mapping is always the best

TVs at fault, not the xbox......it simply has a shit scaler that cant handle a 6pixel difference

That would be my guess. Any decent Faroudja scaller would be able to handle the 6 pixel difference without a problem Most LCDs on the market (yes even the new and expensive ones) use total rubbish for scaller chips, they're designed to scale TV resolutions to the screens native resolution, and that's about it.

A good test would be to put the VGA output into 1280x720 mode...

Normally I'd agree but this problem doesn't sound like one that would be caused by a cheap cable.

Perhaps he did buy the MS vga cable... spending 20 australian dollars is probably the same as spending 40 U.S. dollars

HAHAHA not quite, it's the other way around, the US dollar is worth more then the austrailian dollar $20AUS is = $15USD

The fact that your display doesn't offer any VGA adjustments tells me that the problem is probably in the TV it self. Most HDTVs just aren't made to accept a VGA signal from anything other then a PC (which has internal adjustments). The fact that it doesn't offer any kind of controls is a sure sign that VGA support was nothing more then an after thought.

Based on the pictures you've posted it looks to me like you've got the sharpness on component video cranked WAY too high. Not only that but based on the fact that the text in the 2nd picture is missing the outline it almost looks like the Xbox 360 is outputting in 720x480 mode....  IIRC it drops stuff like outlines in the lower resolutions to make it easier to read. Even still the first picture doesn't look "vibrant" so much as it looks like your adjustments are all way out of whack. I see blooming familiar with brightness/contrast being set too high and I see outlining familiar with sharpness being set too high. Also it looks like the gamma is too high in general.  I could be wrong though, it is an edited photo of a picture of a TV being displayed on a completely different monitor here.  laugh.gif

Try your Xbox VGA in 1280x720 mode and see if it looks similar to your component video cables.
try your PC in 1360x768 to see if it looks the same as your Xbox VGA
Just because your PC looks correct doesn't mean it's the console's problem PCs have a whole lot of software controls to adjust the picture, not to mention they could be using completely different color spaces which makes the way your TV accepts the signal act differently (and without an adjustment on the TV you're stuck with whichever one they designed it for).

My guess would be it's a VGA issue with your TV as well.  It should be noted that any additional sharpness you add to an LCD's picture is artificially added (as in added by whatever software/chip is in the TV) and that you'll get the "true" image when sharpness is set to 0, theoretically.  Sure increasing the sharpness does look good sometimes, but that's not what the image really looks like.  Maybe do several hours of gaming with VGA, and see if you get used to it?

I've never been to Australia either, but I knew the US dollar was worth more and it took me all of 20 seconds to google the official conversion rate.
