New Xbox Power On/off Problem.
« on: October 03, 2004, 04:58:00 PM »

Turns on automatically when power cord attached, and power button seems to have no effect. Although it must work because if I attach the power cord with the power button in, it boots modchip bios.

I have elliminated Power supply as the problem by throwing the MoBo into my known good xbox and the fault remains.

I beleive the problem arose after too many resolders at the front panel resistors when trying to make my aladdin work (even tho it turned out it wasnt the prob).
So I retouched all surrounding resistors and capacitors just lightly with a little new solder and the problem remains. The mobo and cpu temps are normal, mobo at 30-40d cel, CPU @ 35-50d cel.

The problem seems to have progressed as it used to play games for a while and then shut off, but now it lasts only a minute or two.

Im sure it must be related to the fact that it turns on automatically with power applied. But I dont know where else to look.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

xbox : Focus chip, Halo sp ed green, Aladdin advance XT modchip, BIOS: evox 4980

I had this problem and fixed it:

1) the solder is touching the metal sheilding and is ground it
2) You soldered to the wrong point.
3) Make sure you check the solder points, and make sure that the wire is only touch pin 8, and not anything else.

I have the exact same problem with my 1.0 xbox and I limited it down to the possibility of either the motherboard or the PSU and from what I can tell from your posts is it must be the motherboard. I know its not the chip as it had the same problem before I modded it....

Any other possible solutions? I thought I was the only one with this problem.....

Don't think it's going to work man, which is sad. There must be a consistent weakness somewhere for both of us to have the same problem with the motherboard though....

I'm have the same problem too but my system light would go from green to orange in like 20 minutes then to red 10 minutes later then in about 5 minutes it would shut down.  It doesn't always do this though so I'm stumped!!

Well Im giving up on it, have sold to another modder for NZ$160 +$20p&p which is all i could hope for really. He says he will get a new mobo for NZ$100 +p&p so could fix it and have a halo box for $260 which is pretty good for him.

I think that the power button must be getting grounded as nfs911 says, but cant find where. BUT DAM he's got a cool case!!! (nfs911) That neon light in a clear case is fkn wicked. Im gonna get me one!

Good luck guys.

boo.

Same prob. with a friend's Xbox. Also powers on randomly. I think that the problem may be in the chip that's directly above the eeprom chip. Just a suggestion. v1.0

This is happening to me too!!! I have a v1.6 with an xecuter3 chip in. When i plug it in, the system starts up but the buttons dont work. I am hoping that it is just a grounding problem and  i am going to go check all of the solders. I dont see how it worked 2months ago and now there could be a soldering problem... hopefully thats it. Anymore help would be greatly appr eciated//

It's happening to my v1.1 xbox to. One day it just turned of after 20 minutes. Then after about 1 min it turned on again, then off again after 1 second, then on again after 2 second and continued to do so until i unplugged the power cord.

Now it starts up when i insert the powercord and initially stays on for about 20 minutes before its starting to turn on - off -on - off again.. And the power switch has no use.

If i unplug the power cord for a short period and inserts it again it works for about 5 minutes then starts the on-off cycle again.

So i guess there is a heating problem with a resistor/capasitor/transistor somewhere? or some voltage building up due to faulty hardware?

xbox v1.1 with executer2 chip. Not touched since the chip install >1 year ago..

i have a version 1.0 xbox with an aladdin live that acts similar. when i plug in the power cord it turns on automaticaly, power button will work to turn it off tho.i have wandered thru some of the forum and it appears to be a problem with a resistor that you solder your L1 or bt point wires to near the front of the mobo.at least thats what my specific problem is.hopefully that info helps out some.

Try checking the chip that's above the eeprom chip on v1.0-1.5 Xboxes. I've noticed that by grounding out 2 legs that are next to each other on the top left side (closest to the nearest corner) of the chip, the Xbox will turn on. Maybe this chip is the cause of the problem? Just an idea since there's so many people, and I've tried to fix this problem before with no luck.

is nething wrong with the yellow wires on the eject board? if u ground pin 8 or whichever the power one is then it'll be always held down, which will cause it to always be on

no i dont think it is grounding out, since i removed the power switch from the metal shilding and turned it on holding it in my hand.... i took a look at the chip above the eeprom but i dont thik it is grounding out either....? Could it be the psu?
