Connecting Xbox W/ Component
« on: July 24, 2006, 07:13:00 AM »

Hey guys. Just got my 360 and I'm hooking it up and noticed the HDTV/TV switch on the A/V cables. Well here's my dilema. I want to use component inputs into my receiver/tv setup but my tv is not HDTV. I also want to use optical digital out audio which I can't use unless I set the switch to "HDTV". Is there a way to have the xbox output on the component cables w/o needing an HDTV? Thanks guys. Ciao!

All you need is component inputs on the TV.
I don't think, though, that the switch needs to he on HDTV to output optical audio.  It should output either way.

I connected the component inputs into my tv and I got no video. I'll try again though just incase i messed something up.  And according to the manual, I need to be using the component hook ups to get digital audio. Thanks for the help.

So what do all the people who have a normal TV and a 5.1 receiver do?

Of course it outputs sound throught the optical when it isn't switched to HDTV and if you have a TV with component inputs then it will work either switched to TV or HDTV. In TV mode it outputs 480i and in HDTV mode it outputs 480p, 720p and 1080i.

You sure you're not plugging it into composite connections? blink.gif

LoL. My sentiments exactly alsybub. I got a normal tv and 5.1 receiver. Seems it may have been a setting on my receiver though. The component works perfectly when directly connected to my tv. Now I just gotta figure out why it won't transmit through my receiver. Thanks guys!

edit: Got the Optical and Component to work. In all my excitement I forgot to setup the receiver accordingly. =) Thanks again guys.!

can the audio wires of the hd av cable be seperated to plug in to a home theatre reciever while the component wires go into the tv?

Yes, but they'll probably need to be split using a "Y" or a piggyback (if you want sound on your TV, too).

Just to add to what cosmo said above. I use a joytech component cable, and it separates the component section (red wire, green wire, blue wire) from the composite section (yellow wire, red wire, white wire) so you can connect them about 3 meters away from each other. The optical is separate too smile.gif
