Well the Xbox 360 doesn't upscale DVD's to 720p or 1080i, so obviously, a DVD player that does will look much better.

I have both an upscaling DVD player (Samsung HD850) and the 360. Since the last Live! update, the 360 with the VGA cable has been able to upscale DVDs to 720p. I have my set calibrated with my Avia disk, and honestly, the 360 looks better. The only reason the DVD player is still there is because the 360 is hands-off to the kids.

Get a TV with a VGA input, and get the MS-branded VGA cable. You won't be disappointed.

one thing people need to learn though is using your console as a dvd player is never good. its gonna kill your console much faster then regular games.
every person i knew who bought a xbox or ps2 near launch ended up with a dead console within a year or 2.
id go buy a $50 dvd player with progressive scan

At Sams Club, they have multiple upscaling DVD players for under $100, do that rather then just getting a progressive one.

Jesus christ, do people NOT understand you get what you pay for? a cheapo $100> upscaler will make virtually no difference unless you're tv is ASS as upscaling by itself, its people like gamerguy recommending them and then they come and say the technology is worthless.

No de-interlacing processors are created equal, and you probably won't get a genesis for $100........360 is an exception becaue its more powerful hardware that goes about it through software

A $40 VGA cable for the 360 will be better then any $100 upscaler.

I haven't used the Xbox 360 VGA cable. but I have tried a couple of the sub $100 upscaling DVD players on multiple HDTV's, cheap and expensive, and the DVD's always looked much better on the upscaling DVD player then a normal progressive one....

And that whole argument about, "don't use your game console for movie watching because it will ruin it faster" is a bunch of paranoid BS, for the most part.  I have been using my xbox 1 v1.0 ever since it came out for both gaming and dvd movies frequently, and it is still going strong.

Take advantage of you console, and use it for all it's worth.

exactly, DVD's only spin at 1x speed anyway....hardly going to wear out a 12x drive.

Yep.  The "wears out console faster" point is moot.  The DVD drives have an estimated "constant-running" life of almost 11 years.  Of course, you won't get the full time (they overestimate, naturally), but your box isn't on for 24hrs a day, either.  Stop the spread of rumors.

No, its something to do with licensing or upscalers needing digital outputs, but since VGA cable is made for PC monitors and PC's automatically "upscale" DVD's its allowed.
