Good Sound System?
« Reply #15 on: June 28, 2006, 11:00:00 AM »

The onkyo systems won't be as loud or powerful as the logitech but they give you the ability to connect more equipment up to it if you ever buy anything else (like a PS3, Wii, or whatever). You will need to run a digital coaxial cable (looks like an RCA cable but carries a digital signal) from your DVD player to the reciever box. Check your DVD player manual to see if it has this connection and how to turn it on.

Ok then well I'm sticking with the Logitech Z-5500 because I'm only 16 and I'm not going to be adding anything on to the system. When the day comes that I want something better I'll buy a new system. LOL. Thanks again for all the help. As soon as I get my next paycheck I will be ordering the Logitech Z-5500 System. When I get it if I can't figure something out I will post up a question on this thread. I also just wanted to thank everyone from these forums for the fast response times and great answers! YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST! beerchug.gif

So so far this is what I have gathered that I need...

(XBOX 360) Optical Cable probably will get this ONE

(DVD Player) Digital Coaxial Cable *Need a cheap but good recomendation...*

QUOTE(whooda4 @ Jun 29 2006, 10:14 AM) View Post

if your going to be spending over 300, wait a bit more and buy a good system.  When your 16 and like to listen to things loud you tend to blow speakers.  Have you ever listened to a blown subwoofer?  When you get a system like z5500 your buying something that isnt all that special and when it breaks (which it will)  you will be shit out of luck because blown speakers are not covered under warranty.

Upgrades are great, but REPLACEMENT of a broken component is the most importnat part.  something like this http://shop3.outpost...CH:MAIN_RSLT_PG is a far better choice.

Now, neither will be amazing, but the onkyo will be much better than the z5500 could ever become.  Also the onkyo can be upgraded.  I know u said it was not a plan, but why buy two when you can buy one now?

Either will sound good to most people, but the "computer speakers" are just that, they are computer speakers.  They are not going to give you the multitude of connection possibilities that the onkyo has will nor will it have the flexibility.

No offense but do a little research before giving advice.
Your advice looks like you've neither did much research nor read many reviews.

First of all these rarely if ever fall apart, which reading all the reviews will show, compared to things like klipsch, etc.
You may be right about blown speakers not being covered under warranty but try to find 4 people that reported that their z-5500s blew before the end of the 2-year warranty. At 188 watts, 10 inches, and solid design that subwoofer isn't likely to blow any time soon unless he takes it swimming with him.

Connections? z-5500 has mini-jacks, coaxial, and digital optical.

Also wether you can hook up one thing or 5 at a time, the sound QUALITY is what's going to matter. The z series has won enough gaming awards for a small trophy stand. They indeed ARE amazing, especially for the price. Onkyo's are both outperformed and more expensive.

$699 Onkyo setup: Rating - 7.8
http://reviews.cnet....7-30910222.html
$235 Logitech z-5500: Rating - 8.1
http://reviews.cnet....7-31115626.html
Read some actual reviews about the Z-5500, before you say they're not all that special
http://www.amazon.co...8&s=electronics
That's the best you're gonna get for under a thousand. I'll stand by that until someone shows me something better.

Also, to davinator456 who said "if it is 500 rms it is not 1000 peak power":
The RMS is 505 watts in normal play.
For really quiet recordings there is a boost mode which increases the wattage.
So it is indeed 505 watts RMS, and 1010 watts peak power.
Your math was correct but your logic left out this possibility.

Well I have these speakers on my computer and while I think they are nice sounding I would not use them for anything but my computer because they do not have enough inputs. In fact when I bought my house I was going to use them in my extra room to hook up my computer, extra TV, Xbox, dreamcast, and N64 up to but there was not enough connections on it so I just used a JVC receiver and some huge KLH speakers I had around and i has worked out much better that way. They are nice speakers (not to great for music though) but very limiting on inputs. I once bought a very limited HT system for cheap within a year I had changed out the reciever for more connections and then the speakers for better sound. The better you start with the less you have to buy and change later. Oh yea and I got my parents an Onkyo system about a year or two ago and it sounds very good, maybe not better then the logitechs but very close.

So far I have my mind set on the Logitech Z-5500 untill someone can convince me otherwise (the only way that is happening is if you can find me a better system for 300$ or less *maybe if I build it piece by piece???*)... LOL! I have hered that the Z-5500 isn't the best with music but the only music I listen to is rap so I would imagine that rap will sound just fine on them?

In regards to a few people who have pmed me I am currently on vacation and have still not purchased my surround sound. However ... I am 100% sure I will be getting the Logitech Z-5500. I will keep you all updated as to when I finally make the purchase (within the next 2 weeks) And then after I get it all installed and get my room cleaned up I will post pics of my entertainment area haha. The thread with the pics will be named something like 16 year olds gaming area or something like that. Keep an eye out for that in 2 -3 weeks. Thanks again to everyone who has gave me help. If I end up needing anything else I will post questions on this forum. Thanks!

Ok I looked at the chart and I don't quite get it but the wires will need to be about 10-20 feet *TOTAL* somewhere in there. So what do I need exactly? Will I have to splice the wires? Let me know thanks.

I ended up getting... *let me know if I got the right things or if I still need something different THANKS!*

6' SUPER Toslink Optical Audio Cable PREMIUM DV (220012468494) < ebay item # *TO HOOK UP XBOX 360*

6' Digital Coaxial Audio 75ohm S/PDIF Subwoofer Cable (220012468609) < ebay item # *To Hook Up DVD*
IPB Image

I might need something else to hook up my dell i6000d laptop to the sound system not sure right now I'm running the sound from the laptop to my tv using the Belkin mini-stereo audio cable. And the picture from my laptop to the tv is through vga if that matters at all.
IPB Image

I still need something to hook up my tv to the system for normal cable watching *I don't have a cable box* so let me know what I will need to do this.

Ok guys my z5500 system is supposed to be deilvered via fedex today! I haven't been able to sleep because I'm so pumped. I was getting my Sony DVP-NS75H DVD player ready for it and I need to know what to choose for some of the settings because I know nothing about this stuff ha! Let me know what settings to choose (see below) asap. Thanks again guys you rock!  biggrin.gif

Ok so the first part is obviously the setting and then after the : each option is seperated by a ,

Audio ATT: On, Off

Audio DRC: Standard, TV Mode, Wide Range

Audio Filter: Sharp, Slow

Downmix: Dolby Surround, Normal

Dolby Digital: D-PCM, Dolby Digital

DTS: On, Off

48kHz/96Kh PCM: 48kHz/16bit, 96kHz/24bit

Also on the actual z5500 control center system what settings do I need to use? I know you can choose...

Effect Choices: Dolby Pro-Logic II Movie, Dolby Pro-Logic Music, 6 Channel Direct, Stereo, Stereo x2

Settings Choices: Ability to change the Dolby Pro-Logic Reverb and other effects like Center Width and Surround Delay.
