My Experience With 720p And 1080i For Comparison.
« on: May 26, 2006, 07:47:00 PM »

First off I have a 42" Sony LCD projection TV. I used Battlefield 2 for my game of choice on comparing.

1080i looks good runs good. If that is all you experience youll be a happy camper.

I then switched over to 720p and wow what a difference. When moving everything is so fluid and smooth, much better looking while in motion. I noticed no difference looking at static graphics though. (Obviously.)

So at least with my setup and BF2 720p > 1080i. (AKA 60fps >>>> 30 fps)

A 720p native display will display 720p better than 1080i. To properly compare you would need 2 displays, a 1080i display and a 720p display.

And for there to be a difference between 720p and 1080i, you need a game renderd in 1080

Technically yes, but it at least takes one of the conversions out of the process even if the game is 720p. You are correct, a game that is rendered in 720p will always be displayed in an inferior way on a 1080i display.  Displaying a 720p game using 1080i on a 720p display results in the most information loss as there is a double conversion.

720p -> 720p
720p -> 1080i -> 720p
720p -> 1080i
1080i -> 1080i
