Should I Get A Hdtv?
« on: May 22, 2006, 09:09:00 PM »

Here is my situation. I currently have two tvs, 27" and 32" toshiba flat screen tvs whitch we recently bought 3 years ago. Then we got screwed since the year after that, HDTV was the new thing. I was just wondering, is it really worth it to upgrade to a hdtv from an sdtv? I hear that if you have a 360 whitch I do, you need to get a hdtv.

I was looking at walmart the other day, and saw Sanyo 27" hdtv interlaced 1080i for $400.00 canadien. I was wondering if it is a good deal and if it is the right tv for the full performance of the 360. Any opinions would be nice.

Don't get interlaced.

I know I replaced my tv with a good HDTV and the difference was literaly unbelieveable. Everyone said the difference is vast but I really diddn't expect much. My god, even the menu looks amazing lol.

Use Cnet.com for reviews. Also Circuitcity.com has user reviews when you click on specific TVs. Always remember no matter what the reviews say look at it for yourself. I did about 3 months of research before I sprung for mine.

1080i looks just fine.  The upgrade from SDTV to HDTV will be drastic, especially if you have something of an eye for quality video.
I don't know about Sanyo, though.  Panasonic is good, Toshiba, Mitsu, Sony, JVC.  The Sanyo might be OK, but I wouldn't get one from Wal Mart.  They are specially made for Wally world, using cheaper components.  Not high quality.

The difference between a SDTV and a good quality HDTV is absolutely mind boggling.

Many games, such as GRAW, are very difficult to play on a SDTV because the onscreen HUD and information is too small and blurry to see properly. Even games like Geometry wars are much easier to play because you can see more game surface and can more easily see enemy ships.

The image on a HDTV is much more immersive, everything looks brilliant and precise. Over 720p the game performance actually appeared to get better, but I am sure that is just a placebo effect.

I would imagine so, there is very little difference between 720p and 1081i. Also doesnt the xbox have almost double the framerate at 720p opposed to 1080i.

So here is my two options:

A) stay with my toshiba flat screen tv for a couple of years until better hdtvs will go on sale and have better features likes hdmi and 720 p

B)Dish out the 400 dollars cad now and buy the Sanyo HDTV 1080i interlaced

BTW, why is interlaced so bad?

It is my understanding that 720p and 1080i are essentially the exact same thing in terms of the amount of info being displayed at one time. 1080 is double the res of 720 (obviously) but 1080i is only half the amount of lines at one time vs all the lines in 1080p. So you either have half the res with double the amount of lines, or double the res with half as many lines.

To me, it's all a matter of opinion on which looks better (and usually depends on the TV set).

Oh, and you don't NEED an HDTV to play the 360.... but it's HIGHLY recomended and encouraged, lol.

Isn't it true that the 360 runs at 60FPS only on 720p?

720 is 60fps, progressively scanned.
1080i is 30fps, interlaced.

Trust me, 1080i works just fine with the 360.  Even really fast games like Halo 2 are smooth as silk.

yeah man..hdtv is a very VERY drastic change. And if your in canada Futureshop carries a few 27"/26" screens for under $1000, and they're pretty good make. I bought a Proview (LG's affordable make...) 27" widescreen lcd hdtv. quality is amazing..although im still debating on whether or not 16ms response is enough (hey...do tube tv's have blur if response is too low?...do tube tv's even have a "response" measure???) However, the tube tv's in hdtv are much cheaper. I know they also carry a 32" (i think...) toshiba flat screen tube tv, and its HDTV. Plus its not tooo thick, i was actually looking at that before I found the proview.

As for 720p and 1080i..i got nothing. I heard progressive scan was good though...so i use 720. lol.

Tube TV response is less than 1ms. 16ms is WAY too high. On a 17" computer that is noticeable, the larger the screen the more noticeable the delay is. That is what drove me to my LCD projection over a LCD. Plasma was out for me due to burn in since I watch alot of CNN, ESPN and my GF plays puzzle games that have the static graphics.

Actually, do any of you know a pretty decent hdtv that supports 720 p. I've been searching and hearing that 720 p is the best. If its up to 600 cad, i'll definitely buy it. The thing I just realized about this sanyo tv is that it doesn't have any hdmi support witch is a major bummer.

Actually, I'm considering this tv over the sanyo because of three things. It has hdmi, it's widescreen, and it's Toshiba.

Try to buy your tv at Costco. Even if you don't have a membership, it will be worth it to join. For example, I just returned my 2 year old 30"crt hdtv with no receipt for a full refund. Costco offers a no questions asked lifetime warranty on all electronics they sell(except pc's, I think). So in the long run, the $50 yearly membership will be worth it. Not to mention you can get a new tv every year. I know this is a bit of a dirty move, but thats their policy.

Please be aware that Costco isn't stupid, they have permanently banned members for abusing the return policy. This is something that the company is aware of, and they know your purchase history. It really sucks when people abuse the policy, like people did when Costco started selling computer systems. Now you can't return a computer system after 6 months. I really hope that people like you don't cause the same thing to happen with televisions.

Costco is great.  They have a ton of quality HDTVs, many very reasonable.
Don't ruin it for all of us by doing this lowlife stuff.

This was the first time I have done this, and my crt tube was turning blue... So lets not get our panties in a bunch, as this was a legit return. I was just pointing out that Costco is very cool about returns, and has a great warranty plan. I don't have to justify my actions to anyone, as this is their policy.

I shop at Costco for two reasons, slightly lower prices, and the warranty. That is why I pay for a business membership, and that is why they get all my business. I will be returning my plasma once I notice a flaw, and trade it in for a 1080p lcd. Believe me, they're more than happy to give store credit. I returned a $600 tv, and added another $1500 to buy the plasma. So like I said, thay didn't exactly mind. As for the pc return period, they had to lower it since pc equipment gets outdated within months.
